A lot has happened since I last wrote! All you hear about on campus now is Facebook. It’s like a website where you can put your profile on it and other people from schools that Facebook supports put their profiles on too. That way you can find people from high school and college. It’s kind of neat actually. But all I hear is “Are you addicted to Facebook yet”? People here are so into Facebook that’s all they seem to do, until the newness of it wears out, it is all the rave.
We had our Retreat for Emerging Leaders. We went to YMCA Camp Lakewood where we completed a high ropes course. It was really scary but also a huge adrenalin rush. The ropes course was 35 feet high, the second highest in the United States, don’t worry, we were all harnessed up and had workers helping us stay safe! It consisted of climbing up a telephone pole sized pole for about 10 feet and then walking up an inclined pole another telephone pole type pole until you got up. Then you had to walk across two very thin cables that were almost impossible to walk across because I was so terrified that my legs kept shaking which made the cables wobble back and forth rapidly. After that, you came to two narrow pieces of wood that you had to walk across, and then you had to climb up to the next part which was probably another 15 feet up and hold onto a rope above your head and put your feet on the rope lower than the first. Together, the ropes made an X and you had to make your way to the other side. After that, you could pat yourself on the back because all you had to do was go down a zip line to the ground! It was such a great experience to overcome the fear of trusting the people on the ground not to let you fall. The funny thing was though, I had an Australian male worker who was helping me trough the course and he kept saying, “No worries Mate” which was absolutely hilarious! He was so nice and patient when I had to stop to regain composure before I could continue. But that’s not all we did at the retreat, we had fun teambuilding and bonding activities that if you want to know about, you’ll just have to be in the program and find out for yourself! But seriously, everyone should apply for Emerging Leaders! I applied to be a Facilitator and made it! Yay! So I better see whoever is reading my journals in the fall at the interviews for Emerging Leaders! It is one of the best programs to be involved with on campus.
Just yesterday, April 17, we had our community service project. We went out to the Trail of Tears State Park and cleared a path that was destructed by the 2003 tornado. We hiked out to the part that was in bad shape and got to use machetes, axes, weed thrashers, and other nifty tools to cut down the smaller trees that were across the path and clear the trail. It was so funny because we’d all work as a team to cut sections out of a tree that was across the path and when we finally chopped it out of the way, we all screamed and were like “We did it! We chopped down the tree! Whoo hoo!” It’s funny now to look back and think, we were excited because we cut down dead trees, but it was very rewarding to know that because of our work, the trail will soon be reopened.
Other happenings that occurred were my Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society induction, and going home to see my brother perform in our high school’s Dinner Theater. The theme for Dinner Theater this year was “Rock On” and had songs in it such as, the Beetles, Queen, and Shrek Dance Party. You would be very impressed by my tiny school’s production! It was absolutely the best! I am so proud of everyone who was in it, especially my brother who did an awesome job singing, dancing, and announcing on stage! I wish I could invite everyone who is reading this to it next year because just talking about it doesn’t do it justice! Well, that’s all I have for now! Until next time, God Bless!
