Hi everyone!! My name is Nikki Eggleston. I’m currently a freshman here at Southeast Missouri State. I will be majoring in Accounting with a minor in Business Administration. I am a Sundancer, which is the dance team here at SEMO. However, we will be changing our name because starting in January, SEMO will be called the Redhawks. Wow, I don’t know where to begin. The atmosphere here is so different than being in high school. I feel like a different person already and we have just started our third week.
I guess I will begin with why I decided to attend SEMO. When I was looking around at schools, I know there were at least three things I wanted and I wasn’t going to settle for anything less. The first important thing for me was the class sizes. I do not care to be in a class with more than 40 people in it. How are the professors suppose to help you if there are so many? SEMO fit that requirement for me. I am taking five classes which equal 15 credit hours. I have only one class that is over 30 people and it has 32 in it. It is my Microsoft Applications class. So we work in a lab, more room for more people. My other classes range from 20-25 people. It is a nice feeling when the professor comes in and actually tries to know everyone’s name. Then you know that they care and you aren’t just another student to them.
My second requirement was a small enough campus that you could make it from one end to the other in 10-15 minutes. SEMO fit that requirement as well. I don’t know about you, but I like to sleep and if I have to wake up earlier because it takes me a half an hour just to walk to one of my classrooms, I wouldn’t be a happy camper. This semester I have one class on one side and I have 10 minutes to walk to the other. It is definitely capable of being done. Matter of a fact, I make it there in 8! Also, not having such a large campus really helps you become familiar with the campus. Also, things are more accessible. If you have to go to the Kent Library to do some research or go get some help on a paper, it is only 5 minutes away!
Lastly, my third requirement was a friendly atmosphere. I am a very friendly person and I can’t think of another school that when I went to go for a visit, I felt like I could approach anyone if I had a question like I can here at SEMO. The staff, the professors, and the students are the friendliest groups of people I have ever been around at any other college campus!
If you are looking for any of the same things I was when I was choosing a school, really check it out here!
I know I wrote a lot, but I had a lot to say. I didn’t even get to tell you everything! I hope I sparked some interest, or at least one of the other students did. But keep checking in, we will be posting entries throughout the school year! Good luck in school, and don’t lose your study habits! It is hard to pick them back up!
