What’s up everyone! My name is Jessica Lenoir and I am from Kansas City, Missouri. That’s quite a ways from Cape and I doubt that I will be able to visit home as much as I would like, but that’s alright SEMO is already becoming my new home. Before I begin to describe my first few weeks at Southeast let me tell you how it became my college of choice.
Everyone should have a list of things that they are looking for in a college. I wanted a school that was not too large, but also not too small. I was looking for a school with a diverse community. I like to be able to interact with my instructors, so it was necessary that I find a school with small class sizes. My major is currently undecided so of course, I was looking for a school that offers a variety of majors. Money is always a factor so I was also looking at what school was making the best scholarship offer.
It turned out that Southeast was all of these. Not only is the campus beautiful, but you can get anywhere by foot in 15 minutes or less. Also, if you’re one of those people who hates to walk, the shuttle bus runs on a 15-20 minute schedule and can get you anywhere on campus. The community here is also very diverse. Students and faculty here at Southeast are from all over the country (and some outside of the country) and have various backgrounds. All of my classes are relatively small and the professors here try to know every student by name. Southeast offers many different study programs, so whenever I’m ready I have numerous majors to choose from. Now on to the money, Southeast offers many different scholarships. It was one of the best offers that I got. As long as you do well in high school, you’re very likely to be eligible for something.
I was always anxious to get away from home, but at the last minute I got nervous. I knew I would miss all my friends and family, and Kansas City is too far to visit whenever I want to. I was worried about my roommate and what to expect and even if we’d get along. After I moved in I felt much better, my roommate and I get along great. We’re actually a lot alike. Southeast is also a great place to meet new people. When I got here I knew no one, but I have met so many new people and made so many new friends in the past few weeks.
It is almost impossible to sit around in your room and be bored all day. There is always something on campus to do. There are various clubs to join and get involved in. I have already joined the gospel choir and the Resident Hall Association. Everywhere I go I see signs posted with things on campus to do. There are also lots of things to do off campus. Cape Girardeau has a mall, movie theater, and lots of other stores and establishments.
With all of this said, I hope you now have a better feel for me as well as the university. Every week I will post an entry and tell you the events of the past week. Come check it out and get to know me and some of the other students better.
