Christina Vitale: Journal Entry 04/18/2008

This week has been overwhelming, to say the least. Last Thursday, I was elected secretary of University Players. I’m really excited for next year! Friday I went out to eat with Tim. It was nice to eat some new, delicious food, as opposed to the generic Chartwells I have all the time. I saw Biloxi Blues on Saturday and it was incredible.
However, my weekend probably should’ve included more study and homework time than it did. I had a group project, two essays, and a test all on Tuesday. I pulled off the essays and the group project, but the test was not as good. Luckily I’ve done well enough this semester that it won’t effect me too much.

My mom called to tell me my C-Base results had come in the mail, and I beyond passed in all areas! This means after I complete this semester and have 57 hours, I can apply to be admitted into the teacher education program!

One thing that I’ve realized this year is that though the River Campus is a fantastic new addition to campus, it’s caused a huge increase in interest in the Theatre and Dance Department! There are so many freshman that will be entering the department next semester, its overwhelming! Not to mention, it’s now harder than ever to get into classes. Lucky for me, I register early because I’m a Governor’s Scholar, but a lot of my friends can’t get into the classes they need for next semester, classes that are prerequisites for other classes that they need to graduate! Hopefully, we’ll be hiring more faculty as we progress and getting more space, because we seem to have already outgrown the River Campus.

Also, the most talked about event on campus this week is the controversial issue of a man who goes by the name of “Brother Jed.” We have a free speech area on campus, where anyone is free to exercise his/her first amendment right to free speech. This man apparently comes every year to preach, what he believes is, the word of God. I always imagined men like this to be on the street corners of New York and large cities, but here he is, trying to put the fear of God into the students that stand around and mock many of his messages that are considered extremist. I’ll let you look him up on YouTube and decide for yourselves, or you can just wait until next year rolls around and find out on your own.
