Sean Gallagher: Journal Entry 6/20/2005

Hey guys.  It's been quite a busy week around the Hall of Fame, so I haven't had the chance to write as frequently as I'd like to, but things are going great.  I'm getting a firmer grasp of my daily duties as a membership intern and have sold three new memberships over the course of the last week.  I've never been the salesperson type, but I enjoy the way things are set up here.

During a slow day last week, another intern and I went over to the collections part of the museum to do some research on some upcoming presentations we will give for the public called "Artifact Spotlights."  One of the girls interning in Collections showed us each of the different artifacts we have to reseach and present, but in addition she asked if we wanted to go into the "sacred" storage room of player artifacts. Let me just say, the hour that ensued was perhaps one of the best in my life, and it most definitely resurrected the 10-year-old boy in me. I got the unbelievable opportunity to hold Babe Ruth's and Ted William's bats, Stan the Man's uniform pants, The Babe's cleats (when he was a pitcher for the Red Sox!), Sammy Sosa's bat that smacked his 58th home run in 1998, a bat Honus Wagner used at the begining of the 1900's, a Mark McGwire bat when he was an Oakland A, a bat used by Ted Williams signed by him and Satchal Paige.  And sooo much more!  This was an amazing day and a rare opportunity that most baseball fans have only dreamed about.  To grip Babe Ruth's bat, and sniff Bob Gibson's World Series cap (at the request of the collections department) made me somehow feel that I was there when they achieved such great things on the diamond.  All I can say is that this is a great place to work, and I can't wait to see what other surprises are ahead.

Looking ahead this week: I will be traveling to Philadelphia on Thursday with the rest of the interns and many of the full-time staff to watch the Phillies take on the Mets.  After the game, we will be going to Peggy Steele's house for a roast, and to get to know her better.  I'm really excited about this, and I get paid to be here, ha! It's going to be a long, jammed packed trip on Thursday, (the bus leaves at 6 a.m. and returns at midnight) but it should be an awesome day.  Somehow I'll be reporting back to work at the Hall at 9 a.m. the next day for work, but after work I'm going to scratch my travel bug some more and catch the train out of Albany (with a fellow intern) to New York City!  We'll be spending the weekend in NYC and might get the chance to catch a Mets vs. Yankees game at Shea stadium. I'll make sure to write after that.

Take care,

Sean
