Here I am in the last week of the internship. I knew this summer would fly by, and it most definitely has. The flurry that surrounded Hall of Fame Weekend calmed down a bit last week, as attendance numbers died down a bit after Tuesday, but the museum was still full. My parents came to visit last week, and it was good to see them for the first time in two months. They drove up and stayed a night at Niagra Falls before coming to Cooperstown. I took them along with some other friends from Cape down to Collections to look at artifacts pulled from players that we requested to see.
It was quite a treat to see my Father's excitement from holding Lou Gehrig's tiny 1st baseman's mitt and Shoeless Joe Jackson's huge 48 oz bat! My Mom seemed to enjoy holding the jersey that Mark McGwire hit his 62nd Home Run with, and seeing the bat that Henry Aaron swatted his 3,000 hit with. Personally holding Albert Pujols bat was the highlight for me, other than seeing the joy that my family derived from the whole experience.
My parents left Cooperstown on Thursday, and I left for New York City on Friday. I went to the City in search of housing for my next adventure--a 10 month service opportunity with an Americorps program called City Year-New York. The weekend was turbulent, and as expected finding housing in the country's most populated city is no easy task, but I came away from the weekend with some possible spots, and a definite area I desire to live in. Hopefully all works out welll there.
But now I'm back in Cooperstown for my final week at the Hall of Fame. I'm going to miss a lot about this job: my supervisors Ken & Jason have been awesome to work for; the town is picturesque and serene; and working in the heart of baseball history is something I will always cherish; but after almost 10 weeks now I'm ready to come home.
It will be good to see friends and family and catch up on everyone's summer. My 2005 summer experience has been unforgetable, and will undoubtedly affect my person and professional career forever.
Thanks for reading about my experiences this summer I had a great time working, living, and writing about all of it.
Best of luck and if anyone ever wants to apply to the Steele Internship program and has questions, feel free to ask the Communication Department for my email.
Take care,
Sean
