Student to Student: Extracurricular Activities

Well, I guess by now we have gotten most of the serious stuff out of the way.  Hopefully, you are prepared for your academic and residential life at Southeast.  Now we can move on to what you can do with the rest of your time.

Outside of class, Southeast has numerous extracurricular programs that range from athletics to hobbies to pre-professional programs to social clubs to religious groups.  Southeast hosts a large enough campus community to meet almost any extracurricular desire.  And if you find we don’t have a group you are interested in, you can always start one yourself.  To find out more information on starting your own organization, go to the Student Government Web site at http://www2.semo.edu/studentgov/

As far as existing extracurricular activities go, variety would be an understatement.  For a full list of student organizations go to http://www.semo.edu/leadership/studentorgs/list_type.htm.

No matter what you do, make sure you do something besides study.  Although you are in college to learn, it is often the things you do outside the classroom that help you learn the most, like how to deal with your peers.

The most important thing is to look and find something you are interested in.  If you like politics, run for Student Government or get involved with the campus arms of political parties, or go see one of the more politically minded speakers Southeast hosts at Academic Auditorium.

If you like the arts, there are a number of organizations whether it is the art club, or open tryouts for student play productions, Journey, the yearly campus literary journal, the photographic arts club, etc. Find your niche and go after it.  And if you prefer to patronize the arts rather than participate in them, jump on the shuttle and head over to the River Campus to check out the new Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Southeast Museum or catch a production of one of the numerous amateur and professional plays or musical performances that will be gracing the new Bedell and Flex theaters as well as the acoustically spectacular Schuck Recital Hall.  You can catch performances of local musicians in the Beanery or the University Center as well as other places across campus.  Journey also sponsors student literary readings once or twice a month.  Look for their flyers in the Grauel Building.

If athletics are your thing, Southeast has plenty of them.  Information on intramural sports can be found by going to http://www4.semo.edu/recsports/im/index.asp.  NCAA sports are a big part of campus life also.  All information and schedules for NCAA sports can be found at http://gosoutheast.cstv.com/

More importantly, get out of your dorm room.  Turn off the TV, the video game, the computer and go do something.  Even if you do not join an organization, there are always campus events you can enjoy.  Check out the events calendar by going to http://www4.semo.edu/campuslife/admin/allEvents.asp.

One of my favorite events, besides the Journey readings, is the free movie with free refreshments that Student Activities Council puts on each month at the Cape West 14 Cine.  Often, students are allowed to vote on which movies will be shown.  For those of us on limited budgets, a free night out never hurts.

Although I have not listed everything you can do on campus, I have listed enough to whet your appetite.  So take care in whatever extracurricular activities you choose.  Be good and have fun doing it.
