Tenecia Bryant: Journal Entry 1/5/2006 Today we had a bus tour of the ancient cities of Epidavros, Mycenae, and Nafplio. The trip to Epidavros was extremely long because the roads had flooded and we were stuck in traffic for over 2 hours. Our first stop was the Corinth Canal. It's special because it was built to separate the Aegean sea and mainland Greece. We grabbed a quick lunch from a convenient store nearby. I had a ham and cheese sandwich and some plain potato chips, one of my favorite things to eat at home. The next stop was Epidavros. There we saw the a theatre that was over 2800 years old. It's cool that the theatre is still used for performances today. Because of the delay in traffic, we didn't get to see the ancient city of Corinth which was pretty disappointing, We drove through Mycenae, another ancient city, where we saw its acropolis and the world's oldest bridge. Napflio, the ancient capitol of Greece was our last stop. For the short time we were there, we climbed a hill that had 857 steps to the top. It took me a while to actually decide if I was actually going to go up. Halfway to the top, I thought I was going to die. Coming back down, my legs literally felt like jello. When I finally made it back to the bottom, I bought the biggest bottle of water I could find. It was a great experience, but I can't say that I would do it again. When we got back to Athens, we ate dinner at the oldest taverna in the Old Plaka (one of the older parts of the city). There was live Greek music which really set the mood for the evening. At the restaurant, we met a group of older men and their families who used to meet at the taverna several years ago every other day for 20 years. They moved away from town and decided to meet up again for old times sake. The food was absolutely delicious. I had a dish called stuffed bifteki, which was beef sort of like meatloaf stuffed with cheese. On the side I had potatoes, carrots, green beans, and rice. The best meal I've had the entire trip.
