Photo of Statue of David in Florence, Italy.

Tenecia Bryant: Journal Entry 1/8/2006

This morning we went to visit the museum where the real statue of David is.  It was surreal to be standing in front of such a famous piece of art work.  What made it special for me was that I learned the statue was of David from the Bible and he was holding the sling that was used to kill the giant Goliath.  Next we went to mass at the Duomo in Florence.  Even though I'm not Catholic, I enjoyed the service because it was something that I've never seen before.  We met Father Alexander who had been working there for 42 years.  He was very kind and gave us a few words of wisdom after expressing his love for America and us.

After mass we did a little shopping and got ready to leave for Rome.  When we arrived in Rome, we all were pleased to see that the hotel we were staying at was much better quality than the ones before.  We did some sightseeing and got the chance to see the Colosseum lit up beautifully at night as well as a huge monument constructed as a World War II memorial.  After that, we had dinner at an Argentine restaurant.  As usual, the food was delicious.  I had a pasta with cream sauce and bleu cheese (amazing).  Afterwards we went to a bar for drinks and stayed until around 2:00 in the morning, the longest I've stayed up the whole trip.  While we were there, a couple of rose vendors came in selling some really long stemmed roses.  It almost looked like the pulled them up straight out of the ground.  One vendor in particular was very aggressive and was bugging us for about 20 minutes because he didn't understand English.  I think I had the best time that night.
