Recently, there was a question posted by a local television station on Facebook pertaining to college safety. The question was posed for feedback by the local television station in Cape, KFVS-12, stated, "College students: do you think your campus has enough measures in place to keep you safe? This question was based on “A local college student that was apparently attacked and robbed in broad daylight.” One facebook patron had posted, "Just keep the students out of our neighborhood." Moreover, a student of Southeast wrote, “I have not ran into that yet.”
College campuses are not immune from acts of violence. Think of the campus locally as a ‘little town’ within a big city. Within the parameters of Southeast, there are the campus police and emergency call buttons, and everyone seems to own a cell phone. But, does it have the right numbers readily available? According to Southeast Missouri State’s website, “The campus of Southeast Missouri State University has long been noted for its rolling terraces and quiet beauty set in the atmosphere of a small city and for its safe and secure environment." According to the annual report (2005-08) which outlines Southeast Missouri State University crime statistics, you will find the University is one of the safest college campuses in the United States.
Here are some important reminders:
• Security Escorts are available during the evening hours of regular academic semesters (8 p.m. to midnight) by calling Public Safety at (573) 651-2215
• Use campus shuttles whenever you are able to do so.
• Program ICE (In case of emergency number) on your cell phone.
