Are you interested in joining one of the oldest traditions on campus? Audition for the University Marching Band!

Celebrating musical excellence on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University since 1907, the Southeast Marching Band provides students educationally sound and fulfilling musical experiences. The University Marching Band is an important part of the tradition of the University. In fact, the marching band was formed just two years after the building of Academic Hall (1905), is older than both the Missouri State Flag (1913) and the University Alma Mater (1931). And, the Marching Band is the single largest student organization on campus.

The marching band performs at all home football games, on-campus spirit rallies, parades, and at selected high school marching band festivals.

Interested in Joining the Marching Band?

A one-time audition is required for participation in the marching band consisting of a two-octave major scale, chromatic scale, contrasting musical selections, and sight reading.

The Southeast Marching Band (MU386) rehearses on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 4 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. during the fall semester. Enrollment in the Southeast Marching Band is required for participation.

Rehearsals are held at the River Campus. Redhawks Football games are typically Saturday events. Home football games are held on the main campus at Houck Stadium. Each fall term, the Marching Band reports to campus one week prior to the start of classes for early week rehearsals.

  • Colorguard/Featured Twirler

The Colorguard and Feature Twirler(s) are very important auxiliary units of the marching band. These groups have participated in the Marching Band for over 20 years. They perform at all marching band performances during the fall semester. The main venue for performances is Houck Stadium on the main campus of Southeast Missouri State University.
  • Drum Major

Drum majors are the on-field and performance leaders of the Southeast Marching Band. They deliver marching/maneuvering commands, conduct musical selections, serve as rehearsal teaching assistants, and demonstrate the esprit de corps of the ensemble. Drum majors are selected annually by audition and are open to any band member regardless of the chosen major.
  • Student Assistant

A student assistant is not a performing member of the ensemble but, under the guidance of the director, will cover numerous tasks both logistically and educationally. From equipment management and transportation logistics to musical and marching instruction, a typical SA is an upperclassman and an aspiring music educator.
  • Scholarships

As they are available, are offered to members of the Southeast Marching Band. A $725-dollar scholarship ($1000 for All-State Musicians) will be awarded to all members. There are also other Southeast scholarships available to music students.

Show Band

The Southeast Show Band is a select group of brass, percussion, and woodwind students that perform at Southeast Redhawks basketball games and University Student Affairs events. The Show Band primarily performs in the Show Me Center and around the Southeast campus.
