The professional mass communication options of advertising, public relations, multimedia journalism and television/film were initially accredited after completion of a five-year self-study completed in September 2004, a three-day site visit review by an ACEJMC team conducted in November 2004, review by the Accrediting Committee in April 2005, and final approval decided by the Accrediting Council in May 2005.
One of three decisions may be made in regard to a program’s compliance with the Accrediting Standards:
The Southeast program was found to be in full compliance in all options.
Thorough reaccreditation reviews will be conducted every six years, with reaccreditation reviews beginning at Southeast in 2010. Southeast’s mass communication program is one of only two in the state of Missouri and one of only 112 nationwide with ACEJMC accreditation.
Based on the reaccreditation review and visit in Fall 2010, the department received provisional accreditation. The department was found in noncompliance on two standards: Standard 1: Mission, Governance and Administration; and Standard 9: Assessment of Learning Outcomes. The department is working to bring these two standards into compliance and is scheduled for a revisit to evaluate these in 2012-2013.

Mass communication students can work in student media, including the Capaha Arrow and the campus radio station, beginning in their freshman year. They also can attend professional conferences through the numerous organizations with chapters in the department.
