Matt Miller: Transitions Spaces Series 10.1
March 19-May 30, 2010
“Matt Miller: Transitions Spaces Series 10.1,” opens Mar. 19, in the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum, at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus.
The public is invited to attend an opening reception from 4-8 p.m. Mar. 31, with a gallery talk by the artist at 5 p.m. The exhibit will remain on display through May 30, 2010.
Matt Miller's exhibition in the Transition Spaces Series consists of roughly 10 sculptures incorporating metal and wood. This new body of work expresses and represents the human experience as it relates to the artist's life, family, and relationships.
Miller uses the figure as a base to manipulate the human form into simplistic three-dimensional silhouettes. The gentle curves of the figures invoke the soft and subtle line of the human skin. The sculptural forms of line and edges are then penetrated and/or surrounded by the hard edges of steel. These same lines and edges and the merging of metal and wood evoke, for Miller, the visual memory of human interaction based on metaphorical stories of his life and experiences.
