The Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum and Department of Art at Southeast Missouri State University hosts the 34th Annual High School Art Exhibition: "Exhibiting Excellence," from February 12 to March 11, 2012.
The juried exhibition showcases art works created by junior and senior high school students in southeast Missouri and southern Illinois. A variety of mediums will be on display including painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, digital art, fibers, sculpture, and ceramics.
A reception for the artists in this exhibition will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 6. Awards will be presented at 3 p.m. Admission is free. This exhibit will run through Sunday, February 12. "Each year, we see amazing works. The quality achieved by the High School students is impressive, and they show excellent use of their art skills, but some students even go beyond that. They can tell you about a personal connection to their piece, or what it is, they wish to convey through it," says Ellen Hahs, curator of education at Crisp Museum.
Terrance Thomure has been chosen by Southeast's Art Department to be the juror. Tomure earned a BFA from Southern Illinois University and a Master’s Degree from Washington University with an emphasis in art education. Tomure taught in the Art Department of the Affton School District for over twenty-five years and in the Department of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville for five years. He has held the position of Chairman of the Secondary Education Division for the Missouri Art Education Association and the same position for the National Art Education Association. He has served on the Missouri Art Education Association council for twenty years and was honored as Missouri Art Educator of the Year in 2005.
Currently, he teaches in the Fine Arts Department at Thomas Jefferson School. Most recently Terry has concentrated on the use of pastels and particularly enjoys working in “plein aire” and the use of color.
