The 35th Annual High School Art Exhibition, “Exhibiting Excellence,” will be displayed beginning Feb. 10 in the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus.

A reception for the artists in this exhibition will be held from 2-4 p.m. Feb. 10, and awards will be presented at 3 p.m. The exhibit will remain on display through March 10.

“Exhibiting Excellence” showcases the talents of high school juniors and seniors from southern Illinois and southeast Missouri. A variety of mediums will be on display including painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, digital art, fibers, sculpture, and ceramics.

This year’s juror will be Barbara Bickel, assistant professor of art education at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.

Bickel is also an artist, researcher and independent curator. Her art and performance rituals have been exhibited and performed in Canada since 1991. Her articles on arts-based inquiry and a/r/tography have been published in numerous journals and book chapters. She is committed to an integral life practice that encourages relational ways of knowing and being of the artist, researcher and educator.

At Southern Illinois University-Carbondale’s School of Art and Design, Bickel teaches courses in art education and drawing. Her art portfolio and arts-based research can be viewed at www.barbarabickel.com.

Bickel received her doctorate in art education from the University of British Columbia in Canada, where her arts-based research focused on women, ritual and spiritual leadership in multi-faith contexts, collaboration, and restorative and transformative learning. She completed an arts-based Master of Arts in Education at the University of British Columbia, where she inquired into the body as a site of knowing – performing itself as text. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from the University of Calgary in Canada and a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and art history from the University of Alberta in Canada.
