"The Art of the Brick" by artist Nathan Sawaya will open Dec. 10 in the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus.
The public is invited to an opening reception, Friday, Dec. 10 from 4 to 8 p.m.
Some artists use paint, others clay, but Nathan Sawaya chooses to build his awe-inspiring art out of toy building blocks.
'The Art of Brick' focuses solely on LEGO® toys as an art medium, including three-dimensional sculptures and oversized mosaic portraits that surely amaze. More than 30 whimsical and awe-inspiring works, created between 2002 and 2007, are made of close to one million colorful standard LEGO pieces. Sawaya, a New York-based artist, created several new works specifically for the Southeast exhibit.
Sawaya's ability and gift to transform LEGO bricks into something new, his devotion to scale and color perfection, and the way he conceptualizes the action of the subject matter, enables him to elevate an ordinary toy to the status of fine art. He continues to create works daily, while accepting commission work from around the world.
The exhibit will remain on display through Feb. 20.
The museum is located in the Cultural Arts Center at the River Campus, located at 518 S. Fountain Street in Cape Girardeau. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. on weekends. The museum is closed Dec. 23-Jan. 2.
