January 23-March 15, 2009 As a critic, teacher, and artist, this second generation New-York School figurative painter has had a profound influence on generations of artists. A pioneer in the development of New Realism during the 1960s and 1970s, Laderman rejected the prevailing abstract expressionist conventions in favor of a perceptual approach that combined diverse historical sources with a disciplined structural vocabulary. The public is invited to attend an Opening Reception Friday, January 23, from 4-6 pm.

Gary Lang: Out Standing Time

August 15 - October 12, 2008 GARY LANG: OUT STANDING TIME showcases works created during the past five years. Lang is primarily known for his highly structured formal investigations of line and color. Compositions of large, bold, innovative circular, vertical, or interwoven lines produce dazzling optical effects with compelling meditative and ecstatic qualities. A closing reception for the artist will be Friday, Oct. 10, from 4-6 pm, with a gallery talk at 5 pm.

May 11-July 22, 2008 CARDINAL POINTS/PUNTOS CARDINALES: A SURVEY OF CONTEMPORARY LATINO AND LATIN AMERICAN ART FROM THE SPRINT NEXTEL ART COLLECTION includes pieces created by artists from Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, South America, and the United States during the last two decades. The works are divided into four sections or points: The Figure as Symbol; Nature, Seen and Transformed; Mapping the Real Imaginary; and Narratives. The artwork and supporting text explore the evolution of contemporary Latin American art and underscore its rich ethnic, cultural, historical, and intellectual diversity.
Cindy Tower: Workplace Series

February 29-April 27, 2008 Reviewing Cindy Tower's solo exhibition at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in 1994, Roberta Smith observed in The New York Times that "Themes of destruction and preservation, waste and recycling put in regular appearances, without pressing the point or becoming preachy." At the time Tower was creating installations that included a mix of her own paintings, found objects, and on occasion great quantities of panty hose. With titles like "What To Do with Old Boyfriends" and "Pirate Cindy," her installations were characterized by energy, outrageousness, and humor, but fundamentally expressed an underlying concern with transience, decay, and the passage of time.
30th Annual High School Art Exhibition: "Exhibiting Excellence"

The Crisp Museum at the Southeast Missouri State University River Campus will host the Department of Art's 30th Annual High School Art Exhibition, "Exhibiting Excellence," from January 27 through February 24, 2008. The exhibition showcases works created by junior and senior high school students from schools in southeast Missouri and southern Illinois counties. The public is invited to attend an opening reception for the artists on Sunday, January 27, from 2-4 p.m. Awards will be presented at 3 p.m. and include first, second, and third place in the categories of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, fibers, and photography.

This collection of American paintings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries includes works by George Inness, John White Alexander, Carl Krafft and more.
2007 Annual Department of Art Senior Exhibition

The Southeast Missouri Regional Museum and Department of Art at Southeast Missouri State University are hosting the Department of Art Senior Exhibition from April 27 to May 13, 2007. The exhibition showcases the work of seven graduating seniors, who selected works representative of the final stage of their collegiate careers. Exhibited work will include painting, 3D computer animation, and graphic design. Many of the works are available for purchase.
2007 Annual Student Juried Art Assessment Exhibition

The Southeast Missouri Regional Museum at Southeast Missouri State University will host the Department of Art's Annual Student Juried Assessment Exhibition April 4-22. The public is invited to attend the opening reception for the artists from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4. The event is free. Refreshments will be served. Awards will be presented in the following categories: 2D Color/Design Foundations, 3D Foundations, Sculpture, Graphic Design/Illustration, Digital Arts, Ceramics, Fibers, Printmaking, Painting, Drawing and New Genre. Best in Show, Distinguished Merit Award, Area Merit Awards and Purchase Awards also will be presented.
Woodcuts, Engravings and Lithographs: Selections from the Permanent Collection

Southeast Missouri Regional Museum presents Woodcuts, Engravings & Lithographs: Selections from the Permanent Collection. This exhibit features eight prints made by wood engravings from drawings by Winslow Homer, which were published in Harper's Weekly during 1869 and 1870. Homer, along with Honore Daumier, Paul Resika, Pablo Picasso, and other artists' created drawings
29th Annual High School Art Symposium: "Exhibiting Excellence"

Southeast Missouri Regional Museum and the Art Department of Southeast Missouri State University will host the 29th Annual High School Art Symposium, "Exhibiting Excellence," from January 28 through February 18, 2007. This exhibit showcases 75 pieces by promising young artists in their junior and senior years of high school, in private and public schools in southeast Missouri and southern Illinois counties.
2006 Department of Art Faculty Exhibition

This popular annual exhibition will include a lively mix of media and styles in two and three dimensions. Participants will be Dr. Samuel Bishop, photography; Louise Bodenheimer, graphics; Pamela Caskanett, ceramics; Ronald Clayton, painting; Lane Fabrick, painting; Benjamin Heu, ceramics; Dr. Mary Morrell, watercolor; Patricia Reagan, fibers; Sarah Riley, prints; Paul Schock, installation; Dr. Edwin Smith, sculpture; and Katherine Ellinger Smith, drawing/painting. An opening reception for the artists will be held from 4-6 p.m. Friday in the museum.
