- What degree programs does the department offer?
The Department of Music at Southeast offers three undergraduate degree programs: Bachelor of Music in Performance(vocal or instrumental emphasis); Bachelor of Music Education (leading to Missouri state K-12 certification with either vocal or instrumental emphasis); the Bachelor of Arts in Music (instrumental or vocal major emphasis).
- Is your department accredited by a national organization?
The department is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and is thereby required to administer a performance audition to all incoming students. regardless of degree program. Prospective students with insufficient performance skills may either receive a one-semester probationary admission or be rejected summarily, pending the outcome of the audition, regardless of academic qualifications. All prospective music majors must read music fluently.
- What is the process for becoming a music major? Can I get a free lesson from a Southeast faculty member?
Music Auditions take place on the first Saturdays of February and March each spring prior to the fall semester of entry. All students should complete our online Music Scholarship Application and schedule their audition after being accepted by the university. Prospective students should prepare two pieces of contrasting styles. Works need not be memorized, although prospective piano and organ majors are encouraged to play at least one piece from memory. Vocalists should sing one audition piece in a foreign language (Italian or Latin). An accompanist will be provided for vocalists. Accompaniment for instrumentalists is optional. Students will also be expected to sightread. Prospective music majors are encouraged to contact the Music Office (573-651-2141) well in advance of the audition dates for more specific information and a free sample lesson with the prospective studio instructor.
- What criteria should be used to select a degree program in music?
The selection of a specific degree program is determined, to a large extent on career plans. The B.M.E. degree prepares the student to teach in public schools in Missouri. The program of study contains seven semesters of required course work, with the eighth semester devoted to student teaching off campus. The B.M. degree is sought by students wishing to perform with established professional orchestras, bands, or choirs or wishing to teaching at the college/university level. In most cases, these students will begin the Master of Music degree in performance immediately upon graduation at another institution and may well strive eventually to complete the doctoral degree in music. The Bachelor of Arts in Music is the least rigorous of the degrees and is ideal for the student wishing to combine music with another field (music merchandising, copyright law, etc.)
- If I get a degree in music education, will I be able to get a job?
While some parents may grieve about the fact that their son or daughter wants to enter music as a profession (low pay, no prestige, etc. etc.), in actuality, there is an acute shortage of qualified music teachers in this country. Music vacancies are everywhere. Students indicating interest in the B.M. degree should be encouraged to apply. There is an increasing number of vacancies at college/university music teaching due to the retirement music professors of baby boomer age. Encourage students to pursue the degree program which appeals to them.
- What about financial aid? Do you offer scholarships?
Prospective music majors are encouraged to apply for all academic scholarship aid. In addition, specific endowed music scholarships are available, as well as competitive music scholarships offered through the Department of Music. To audition, prospective students must fill out our online Music Scholarship Application, and have 2 references complete the Scholarship Recommendation Letter and submit it via US Postal mail. The audition for music scholarships also serves as an audition for admission to the music department as a major. Students who intend to minor in music may be considered for music merit scholarships, however, students expressing their intention to major in music are treated preferentially. Smaller performance stipends may be available for non music majors who perform with the Golden Eagles Marching Band, the University Choir, or the Symphony Orchestra. Students interested in those stipends should contact Beverly Delph in the Music Office in the Department of Music as early as possible.
- How do I join a Southeast music ensemble?
Acceptance into the Wind Symphony, the University Choir, the Studio Jazz Band, the Guitar Ensemble, and the Symphony Orchestra is by competitive audition during the first week of classes. Admission to the Golden Eagles Marching Band and the Choral Union is open to all students regardless of major with no audition required. There is also a rich variety of chamber ensembles to choose from. Students will receive information about these groups from our studio instructors.
- Does Southeast have instruments for rental?
A limited number of instruments are available for rental from the department at a nominal fee each semester. Students assume full liability of the instrumental during the rental period, including full replacement cost if the instrument is lost or stolen. However, students are expected to bring their own instruments to campus. A locker may be rented in Brandt Music Hall. The student must provide a combination lock.
- What kind of faculty members teach in the department of music?
The Music Faculty consists of eighteen full time faculty members and six adjunct professors, each with extensive professional experience. The department provides a challenging musical atmosphere in a nurturing and positive environment. Virtually the entire faculty knows each music major on a first name basis. Over one-third of the faculty has received awards for outstanding teaching at the local, regional and state levels. Over one-third of the faculty has national and international credentials as performers.
- What about the music department’s facilities?
Our brand new River Campus opened in Fall 2007. The renovation of St. Vincent’s Seminary includes newly refurbished classrooms, practice rooms, and instructor studios, a 150 seat music recital hall and a 950 seat concert hall (shared with the Department of Theater/Dance) provides state-of-the-art performance spaces. Music students will have the opportunity to interact on daily basis with other students of the performing and visual arts.
