The Choral Union is the University’s largest choir comprised of both student and community members. Its primary role is to serve as the University’s symphonic chorus with more than 100 singers performing major choral works each semester with the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra. This semester Choral Union will be performing one of the 20th century’s most beloved choral-orchestral works, Martin Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna. The performance will feature the Choral Union, the University Choir, and the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra. This will be the first performance of this work in our community.
Mr. Jeff Sandquist is the interim director of the choral ensembles this semester. He brings a wealth of experience to the groups, having served for 30 years in the Missouri Public Schools with the last 24 years as choral director in the Rolla Public Schools. He is also currently serving as the Artistic and Executive Director of the Rolla Choral Arts Society, Director of Music at First Presbyterian (Rolla), and maintains an active leadership role in the Southwest Division of the American Choral Directors Association.
The rehearsal schedule for Spring semester 2016 will move to Tuesday evenings for one semester only in order to accommodate several schedule adjustments in the department. The first rehearsal will begin Tuesday, January 26th at 7 p.m. in room 120 of the Dobbins River Campus Center. There will be a reception following the rehearsal for Mr. Sandquist, giving you the opportunity to meet him and welcome him.
Each singer in Choral Union must purchase their own scores of the Lauridsen “Lux Aeterna”. For your convenience scores will be available at the first rehearsal for purchase ($8.00). Membership in the Choral Union is open to all experienced and confident singers. There is no required audition to sing in the Choral Union.
Recent masterworks performed by the Choral Union include the Vivaldi Gloria, James Mulholland’s Three 17th Century English Lyrics, the Mozart Vesperae solennes de Confessore (K339), the Fauré Requiem, the Vaughan Williams Five Mystical Songs, the Shaw/Bennett Many Moods of Christmas (suites one and three), the Haydn Harmoniemesse, the Schubert Mas in G, Perry’s Blest Pair of Sirens, Paul Basler’s Songs of Faith, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, as well as pieces especially commissioned for Southeast Missouri State University. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall in Washington, DC with the United States Air Force Symphony Orchestra.
The Choral Union meets from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday evenings in the choral rehearsal room at the Dobbins River Campus Center (RCC 120). No audition is required!
