Dr. Steve Hendricks received degrees in music education with an emphasis in vocal music and conducting from the University of Louisville (B.M.E., M.M.E.) and Ball State University (D.A.). He has been active in music education for almost 25 years, as a teacher, researcher and conductor. His children’s choirs have performed with the Louisville Ballet, the Louisville Orchestra and the Kentucky Opera. Dr. Hendricks also has been a clinician and conductor for regional elementary children’s choirs in both Minnesota and Missouri; and he has presented at several regional and national conferences (including the American Orff-Schulwerk Association and the Suzuki Association of the Americas). Before coming to Southeast Missouri State University in 2000, Dr. Hendricks served for four years as music education specialist at Bemidji (Minn.) State University. He returns to northern Minnesota each summer to direct the Chi’ZiBii Suzuki Institute orchestra program and to coach chamber ensembles.
Dr. Hendricks's duties at Southeast have included teaching general music methods classes, supervising field experiences and student teachers and assisting with music theatre productions. He was music director and conductor for the 2004 and 2011Southeast Missouri Music Academy productions of the Benjamin Britten opera, Noye's Fludde. Over 150 children and adults from the Cape Girardeau area were involved in each production. Dr. Hendricks also conducts the University chamber choir, Cantus Choralis. This auditioned ensemble specializes in music of the Renaissance and early Baroque periods as well as contemporary chamber works.
