Barry W. Bernhardt, associate professor of music, is the director of University Bands at Southeast Missouri State University. Prior to coming to Southeast in 1990, Bernhardt held positions at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, from 1988-1990; at California State University - Long Beach from 1984-1988, and at Truman State University from 1982-1984. Bernhardt is a native Missourian from Macon and holds both his bachelors and masters degrees in music education with instrumental conducting and trumpet performance emphasis from Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo.
At Southeast, Bernhardt directs the Golden Eagles Marching Band, the Southeast Wind Symphony and Chamber Winds. In addition, Bernhardt teaches courses in Marching Band Techniques, Jazz Appreciation and Instrumental Conducting. Bernhardt is a founding member of the Southeast Faculty Brass Quintet and continues to be active as a trumpet performer. He also is the chairman of the Department of Music Student Recruitment and Retention Committee.
Bernhardt has been on the production staff of Bowl Games of America since 1989 and annually writes several halftime performances for major university bowl games, in addition to annually conducting at least one performance for national television. He has choreographed shows for the Silicon, Champs Sports, Holiday, Gator, Alamo, Liberty, Sugar and Orange Bowls. For the 2008-9 bowl game season, Bernhardt wrote eight bowl game shows and conducted the Champs Sports Bowl Halftime Show for ESPN, the Gator Bowl Halftime Show for CBS and the BCS National Championship Pregame and Halftime Shows for ABC.
Bernhardt is an active clinician and guest conductor, and currently writes competitive marching band shows and arrangements for several high school bands in Missouri, Illinois and Kentucky, and for the Clondalkin Youth Band in Dublin, Ireland. He has written for the University of Notre Dame Marching Band and the State University of West Georgia Marching Band. He is in constant demand as a conductor, clinician, drill designer/choreographer and adjudicator throughout the United States. Mr. Bernhardt recently conducted the 2005 West Virginia All-State Band in Morgantown, West Virginia.
He holds membership in Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Kappa Psi, Pi Kappa Lambda, the Missouri Music Educators Association, The Missouri Bandmasters Association, CBDNA, and Phi Beta Mu. Bernhardt is the faculty advisor for the Iota Psi Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Men's Music Fraternity at Southeast and Alpha Phi Omega, National Service Fraternity at Southeast.
