Southeast is proud to offer voice studies with a diverse and experienced faculty. Our curriculum promotes a complete educational experience in vocal technique and interpretation of opera, oratorio, art song and music theatre. Voice lessons are available to majors and minors and to non-majors if openings are available
Students are often selected to perform solos with University choral ensembles, the orchestra and in master classes and recitals. Southeast faculty and students also participate in the National Association of Teachers of Singing student auditions each year, frequently yielding finalists and placing winners in this vocal competition.
The Choral Union is the University's largest choir. Each semester, over 100 singers from the University and the community gather to rehearse and perform major choral works with the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra. This choir has performed many masterworks from Handel's Messiah and Rutter's Requiem to pieces especially commissioned for Southeast Missouri State University. The Choral Union meets from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. No audition is required!
The University Choir is Southeast's premiere choral ensemble. Open to all University students by audition, this 50-voice choir performs vocal music of the highest quality-not just from the classical choral repertoire-but spirituals and folk songs from America and abroad. Rehearsal times are Mondays from noon to 12:50 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30-1:45 p.m. (audition required)
The Chamber Choir is open to all University students by audition. This sixteen-voice ensemble is designed to study, rehearse and perform choral works most appropriately sung by a small group. Specific attention is given (but not limited) to the music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Singers also learn about and engage in period- and style-appropriate performance practices. The Chamber Choir rehearses Wednesday afternoons from 4:30–6 and Fridays from 12:30–1:20. (audition required)
