Southeast Public Radio to Broadcast 'A Prairie Home Companion’s' Joke Show

Southeast Public Radio's "A Prairie Home Companion" will air its annual "The Joke Show" March 8-9.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., March 4, 2008 -- Penguin jokes, lightbulb jokes, political, knock-knock, tasteless ᾰ once again, it’s time for "A Prairie Home Companion’s annual laugh fest: The Joke Show. There are two chances to get in on the fun: Saturday, March 8 at 5 p.m. -- with a repeat broadcast Sunday, March 9 at 1 p.m. on Southeast Public Radio.

Garrison Keillor, actress Sue Scott, Tim Russell (the man of many voices), and sound-effects wizard Tom Keith will be on hand, along with the Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band and special guest Roy Blount Jr., editor of Roy Blount’s Book of Southern Humor.

“OK, the ‘penguin walks into the bar’ joke is not a great,” says Keillor. “Marvelously adequate, maybe. One would like to think there are better ones.” And so he invites listeners with a good joke in mind to send it right away to jokes@prairiehome.us. “If we use a joke ᾰ that you were the first to send in ᾰ on the air,” he says, “we’ll mail you a complimentary English Majors two-CD set as a thank-you gift.”

Currently in its 34th season, "A Prairie Home Companion" has made Minnesota’s way of life and the fictional small town of Lake Wobegon part of American popular culture. The show is heard on more than 500 public radio stations nationwide, with a weekly audience that tops 4.3 million listeners. The program can also be heard on XM Radio, the Armed Forces Network Europe, the Far East Network, and in dozens of European cities via the Astra satellite network. Keillor’s signature monologue, "The News From Lake Wobegon," is available via podcast/iTunes.
