CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Sept. 15, 2008 -- Southeast Public Radio announces plans to air Public Radio International's (PRI) "The World" an international news program from PRI that links global events to American concerns. "The World" will begin airing weekdays, Sept. 29, following "Afternoon Classics."
"Nations of the world have become much more interdependent in recent decades," says General Manager Dan Woods, "and America's role as the leading world power is evolving. It is crucial, especially in the wake of September 11, that we as citizens are informed about events and trends beyond our borders.
"By airing PRI's 'The World,' we bring unique global coverage, perspectives and analysis to our listeners, and that contributes to a healthier, more rigorous discussion of national priorities and foreign policy. Supporting such discussion is one of public radio's most important mandates, and we are pleased to offer 'The World' in pursuit of that goal," Woods adds.
Each weekday, PRI's "The World" brings one-of-a-kind international stories home to America. Host Lisa Mullins guides listeners through the issues and stories of the day, linking global events directly to the American agenda.
Coverage for "The World" is provided by a global network of experienced journalists. The program also has access to the 250-plus BBC correspondents located around the world. Unique in public radio, this body of correspondents works in concert with the program's multinational team of producers and editors, and brings an exceptional depth of insight and freshness of perspective to the program content.
In addition to its ongoing coverage of breaking news and top world stories, PRI's "The World" features regular program segments, including global music, showcasing world artists and their work, and the popular GeoQuiz, in which listeners test their knowledge of locales far and wide.
"The World" is a co-production of the BBC World Service, Public Radio International and WGBH Radio Boston. It is made possible in part by Merck, Medtronic, Capital Group Companies, Liberty Mutual and the PRI Program Fund, whose contributors include the Ford Foundation and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
Southeast Public Radio is Cape Girardeau’s and Farmington’s local Public Radio International affiliate and a National Public Radio member station.
