Southeast Missouri State University Marketing Students Win in State Competition
LAKE OZARK, Mo., Feb. 22, 2011 -- Southeast Missouri State University marketing club students Ryan Maurer, Anita Lucious, and Astridia Dean won high honors in the 2011 Collegiate DECA State Career Development Conference and Competition Feb. 17-18 at the Four Seasons Lodge in Lake Ozark, Mo.
Ryan Maurer of Cape Girardeau won first place in the Retail Management Business Simulation Competition, competing in a field of outstanding entrants from the across the state. Also, Anita Lucious of Cape Girardeau and Astridia Dean of St. Louis won first place in the Business Law Case Competition, again, competing against outstanding competitors from Missouri and Kansas. In all, the Lake Ozark competition featured approximately 250 competitors from Missouri colleges and universities.
In addition, several of the Southeast Collegiate DECA competitors were proficiency winners in their events for superior performance in their role plays and marketing exam. This year’s proficiency winners include: Rebecca Talken of St. Charles, Mo., Fashion Merchandising and Marketing; Nikki Bauer of Glendale Heights, Ill., Retailing Management and Marketing Management; Tierra Jackson of St. Louis, Retailing Management; Nathan Jones of Lake Worth, Fla., and Abe Elbreki of Hazelwood, Mo., Sports and Entertainment Marketing; Ryan Maurer of Cape Girardeau and Erin Melvin of West Frankfort, Ill., Sports and Entertainment Marketing; Kalyn Weaver of Florissant, Mo., Hospitality; and Wenqian Wang of Beijing, China, Hospitality.
As part of its commitment to experiential learning, the Department of Management and Marketing in the Harrison College of Business has sponsored Collegiate DECA (formerly known as Delta Epsilon Chi, or DEX) for several years, and each year sends numerous participants to the state and international competitions. In the spring 2011 semester, membership climbed to 58, making the Southeast DECA chapter among the largest in Missouri.
Collegiate DECA, with more than 14,000 members, serves its diverse international membership as a professional organization, providing leadership and career opportunities to develop and enhance the leaders of tomorrow. Collegiate DECA’s renowned Competitive Events Program uses interviews, tests, role-plays, online simulations, and written project reports to evaluate students’ marketing and management skills – specific skills identified by the business community as essential for success and taught through Collegiate DECA activities.
