Mark O’Connor, Patrice Jackson to Present Free Master Classes/Lecture Demonstrationsby News Bureau on
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Oct. 3, 2011 -- Grammy Award-winning artist Mark O’Connor and Patrice Jackson, award-winning cellist, will present free master classes and lecture demonstrations Oct. 10 as part of their residency at Southeast Missouri State University.
Jackson will coach several Southeast students in an open master class at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Music Recital Hall. Jackson is a brilliant young cellist who was awarded first place in the Senior Laureate Division of the nationally renowned Sphinx Competition. Since then, she has performed with the Atlanta, Detroit, Dallas, New Jersey, Milwaukee, Omaha, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Grand Rapids, Nashville, Hartford, Chautauqua, Colorado and Mississippi symphonies as well as with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Jackson will coach students in repertoire by Elgar, Dvorak and Bach.
Later that afternoon O’Connor will present a free lecture demonstration of his repertoire for solo violin, including his caprices and concertos. This event will take place at 4:30 p.m., also in the Shuck Recital Hall on the River Campus. O’Connor is one of the most notable American composers and performers active today, with multiple Grammy Awards, commercial sales of 2 million CDs, and collaborations with such artists as Yo Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Renee Fleming. The New York Times has commented upon his career as “one of the most spectacular journeys in recent American music.”
Both Oct. 10 events will be free and open to the public. O’Connor and Jackson will then be the featured guest artists in the Gala Season Opening Concert of the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11.
