Southeast Alumni Association to Honor Alumni, Faculty With 2011 Merit Awards
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Oct. 6, 2011 – Seven alumni and one faculty member will receive Merit Awards presented by the Southeast Missouri State University Alumni Association Oct. 21at the Copper Dome Society/Merit Recognition Program during the Homecoming celebration.
Since 1958, Alumni Merit Awards have been presented to southeast graduates who have brought distinction to themselves and the University.
This year’s Alumni Merit Award recipients are: Bill Black, ’75, of Knoxville, Tenn., professor and associate head of theatre at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville; Dr. Maureen Clancy-May, ’79, of St. Louis, superintendent of the Bayless School District; Kevin Govero, ’74, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., president and owner of B.P. Financial Services, Inc.; Daniel Mohorc, ’77, of Arlington, Texas, president and chief executive officer of Galactic Ltd.; Anne Schroeppel, ’73 and’80, of Hutchinson, Kan., co-owner and co-manager of Jackson Brothers, L.L.C. and Jackson Brothers, Joint Venture, and general partner of the Jackson Family L.P.; Dr. Mark Stacy, ’81, of Durham, N.C., professor of medicine/neurology and associate dean of clinical research at Duke University Medical Center; and Charles Stamp Jr., ’71, of Atlanta, Ga., and Cashiers, N.C., vice president of Public Affairs Worldwide at Deere and Company.
This year’s Faculty Merit Award recipient is Dr. Susan Swartwout, professor of English and publisher and editor of the Southeast Missouri State University Press. The Faculty Merit Award is presented for excellence in teaching.
Bill Black has been designing, teaching and directing the production of costumes for the University of Tennessee-Knoxville’s Department of Theatre and the Clarence Brown Theatre Company for more than 30 years and has participated in the production of more than 200 plays, musicals and operas.
An active professional designer, his work has been seen across the country at professional theatres such as the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Denver Center Theatre Company, Madison Repertory Theatre, Pioneer Theatre Company, Playmakers Repertory Company, Roundhouse Theatre, Skylight Opera Theatre, Tennessee Repertory Theatre, Three Rivers Shakespeare Festival and for more than 20 seasons at the Tony Award Winning Utah Shakespeare Festival. His costume design work has been listed among “Pittsburgh’s Best,” “Best of Season” by the “Salt Lake Tribune,” and he is a two-time winner of the Knoxville Area Theatre Coalition award for best costume design.
In 1996 and in 2004 he was awarded the John F. Kennedy Medallion for outstanding service to the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival. He served two terms as president of the Tennessee Theatre Association and two terms as Tennessee state representative to the board of the Southeastern Theatre Conference.
Black received his Bachelor of Science in Education from Southeast with majors in art education and speech education.
Dr. Maureen Clancy-May
Dr. Maureen Clancy-May is superintendent of the Bayless School District in the greater St. Louis area. Bayless School District has approximately 1,500 students in grades K-12. She previously served as a superintendent for instructional support at Riverview Gardens School District.
Clancy-May received a Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in exceptional child from Southeast. While on campus she was affiliated with the Student Government Association, Homecoming Steering Committee and Student Activities Committee. In 2003, she received the Southeast Salutes Award. She has been an active member of the St. Louis chapter of the Southeast Missouri State University Alumni Association.
In 1992, she received a Doctor of Philosophy from St. Louis University. Clancy-May and her husband have six children.
Kevin Govero is the president and owner of B.P. Financial Services, Inc. in Cape Girardeau, Mo. B.P. Financial Services, Inc., which he founded in 1981, and specializes in retirement and estate planning.
Govero earned a Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in industrial and technical education from Southeast. He later earned certification as a Chartered Life Underwriter and as a Chartered Financial Consultant.
He has been active in many civic organizations and serves as a member of the Planned Giving Advisory Council at Southeast. He also has served on the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce Board and as a member, president and secretary of the Cape Girardeau Lion’s Club. He has been chairman and a member of the board of Saint Francis Medical Center Foundation, a member of the Saint Francis Medical Center Board of Directors, president of the Notre Dame Booster Club, and president and a board member of the Area Wide United Way. He has been president and a board member of the Southeast Missouri Crime Stoppers and is chairman of the Tree Advisory Board in Cape Girardeau. He is also a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church, where he serves on the Finance Council.
He is married to his high school sweetheart, Debra Klaus Govero.
Daniel Mohorc is the president and chief executive officer of Galactic, Ltd. Galactic was founded by Mohorc in 1993 and specializes in meeting and event planning, merchandise incentive programs, destination management services, website design and hosting, group and individual travel programs, airline concierge services and communications services that create strong relationships between the company and the people driving its success.
Mohorc has an extensive background and broad range of experience in sales, marketing, management and the incentive industry. He has assumed responsibilities for planning and implementing sales strategies for the generation of new business, monitored competition to outline opportunities, pinpointed voids and opportunities on a per-chain basis, developed new sales and marketing programs, and coordinated efforts that generated sales results beyond planned goals.
He has 35 years of professional experience in wholesale marketing and sales management, particularly in the food industry. His responsibilities have included development of a national sales force, territorial sales management and public relations. He has served as president and chief executive officer of Galactic Marketing Incentives, Inc.; director of marketing with Landmark Incentive Marketing, Inc.; senior vice president of Tripifoods; vice president of sales with Core-Mark International; national sales manager-corporate , vice president of marketing-Southwest Division and area sales manager-Southwest Division, all with McLane Company; and sales representative with Oscar Mayer and Company.
He received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Southeast in 1977, with majors in marketing and psychology. At Southeast, he has served as a guest speaker for the Donald L. Harrison College of Business.
Schroeppel, a 1973 and 1980 Southeast graduate, is the co-owner and co-manager of Jackson Brothers, L.L.C. and Jackson Brothers, Joint Venture and a general partner of the Jackson Family, L.P., all in Eureka, Kan. These businesses are family companies involved in oil production; management of pastureland; construction of ponds, cattle guards, driveways and building sites; and raising registered Black Angus cattle in the Flint Hills of Kansas.
Schroeppel was born in Wichita, Kan., and raised in the Flinthills of Kansas at Eureka. She graduated from Eureka High School in 1969 and attended The University of Kansas for three years before marrying David Casper of Wichita in July 1972. David was an engineer employed by Procter & Gamble as a department manager in the Cape Girardeau plant. Mrs. Schroeppel transferred to Southeast Missouri State University where she later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in speech pathology. Subsequently, she was employed by Dr. James Hall in Cape Girardeau until the birth of her first son Stephen Casper in 1976.
Her husband David tragically died of systemic lupus erythematosus in 1977 at the age of 27. Mrs. Schroeppel had always been interested in being a nurse and as a young widow and mother decided to return to Southeast in 1978, earning her associate of arts in nursing degree in 1980. She received her registered nurse license in Missouri that same year.
In September 1980, she married the Rev. John Schroeppel. In the ensuing years, she has been at his side in his ministry serving Lutheran congregations in Saskatchewan in Canada, as well as in Iowa and Kansas. They are the parents of Dr. John Paul Schroeppel, Peter Schroeppel and Sarah Schroeppel DeBacker, in addition to Stephen Casper. Mrs. Schroeppel has held nursing licenses in Iowa and Kansas and Missouri, remaining involved in continuing education.
In 1994, the family moved to Kansas where the Rev. Schroeppel became the pastor at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hutchinson and Mrs. Schroeppel became conservator and guardian for her father Karl Jackson of Eureka, Kan. Mrs. Schroeppel began her career at the family businesses, Jackson Brothers, L.L.C.; Jackson Brothers, Joint Venture; and Jackson Family, L.P when her father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Her father died in May of 2001 and her mother in October of the same year.
Since then, Mrs. Schroeppel has been a co-owner and co-manager of the family businesses along with her cousins, Roscoe Jackson II and Laura Jackson Clearie. She continues to maintain her R.N. license in Kansas and has worked diligently to interest students in careers in nursing and medicine. Two of her children have chosen to go into medicine. Dr. John Paul Schroeppel is a fifth year resident in orthopedic surgery at the University of Kansas Hospital and Sarah Schroeppel DeBacker is a fourth year medical student at the University of Kansas Medical School, Kansas City. Her son Stephen Casper is a manager in the family companies, and son Peter Schroeppel is a business communications major at Fort Hays State University in Kansas.
Mrs. Schroeppel is the grandmother of Ashleigh, Austin, and Annaliese Casper of Eureka, Kan., and Payton and Addison Schroeppel of Westwood, Kan.
Mrs. Schroeppel continues to demonstrate her interest in the Department of Nursing at Southeast by helping to provide deserving students with funds to help pay for incidental expenses involved with their education. She believes her nursing education has been invaluable in her life and remains committed to helping students achieve their career goals in the nursing profession.
Dr. Mark Stacy
Stacy, a Cape Girardeau, Mo., native, is professor of neurology and associate dean of clinical research at the Duke University Medical Center.
Stacy is a well-respected national expert on Parkinson’s disease and has published more than 100 manuscripts on Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, tremor and other movement disorders. He also has published “The Handbook of Dystonia,” more than 75 journal articles as well as numerous book chapters. He has given more than 50 international and national presentations and has been featured in major media outlets. He regularly provides expert commentary to the Parkinson’s disease community via WebMD.
His areas of research interests include Parkinson’s disease, benign essential Blepharospasm, essential tremor, Botulinum toxin, cervical Dystonia, deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus for Parkinson’s disease, genetic linkage with Parkinson’s disease and neurology clinical trials.
He is currently involved in several organizations, including the World Health Organization Parkinson’s Disease Working Group, the Dystonia Study Group, the Movement Disorders Society and the American Academy of Neurology. He has been a member of the World Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Related Disorders and the Michael J. Fox Foundation, among many others.
Stacy received his Bachelor of Science with a major in zoology from Southeast and his medical degree from the University of Missouri in 1986. He did his residency in neurology at the Hahnemann University Hospital at Drexel University College of Medicine in Pennsylvania and his fellowship in movement disorders at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
He also serves as director of the Duke University Movement Disorders Center and previously has served as chief operations officer of the Neurology Clinical Research Organization at Duke University Medical Center, Division of Neurology, director of the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Research Center and director of the University of Missouri Parkinson’s Disease Clinic and Movement Disorders Center.
Stacy has received several awards, honors and grants, including the Best Doctors in America and the Best Doctors in North Carolina awards. He has also been the recipient of Southeast’s Young Alumni Merit Award.
Charles Stamp Jr.
Stamp has been vice president of Public Affairs Worldwide at Deere & Company since 2002.
In his role at Deere, Stamp leads a global organization that analyzes macro-economic and geo-political trends and conducts government relations and public affairs worldwide on behalf of a company with 60,000 employees and operations in more than 100 countries.
He joined Deere in 1999 as part of the company’s acquisition of InterAg Technologies, where he was the president and chief executive officer. He also served as president of John Deere Special Technologies Group and president of the Agricultural Division of Global AgServices.
From 1974 to 1981, Stamp practiced law in Sikeston, Mo. He entered the agribusiness industry in 1981 as president of Meyer Agri-Products, which later became a division of Butler Manufacturing Company where he served as vice president. Later, he was president of Capital South Investors and a partner in Capital Partners, Ltd., which founded InterAg Technologies.
Stamp is a member of the board of directors for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Missouri Bar Association. He previously served as chairman of the board of the Association of Equipment Manufacturers and is a life honorary director. He was also a trustee of the Farm Foundation.
Stamp is a founding member of the Alumni Association and was a member of the golf team and Sigma Chi fraternity while a student at Southeast.
The Missouri native received his Bachelor of Arts with a major in political science from Southeast and earned a law degree from the University of Missouri’s School of Law.
Dr. Susan Swartwout
Dr. Susan Swartwout is professor of English at Southeast Missouri State University and publisher and editor of the Southeast Missouri State University Press. She has been employed by Southeast for 15 years, teaches courses in creative writing and literary editing, 20th and 21st century American poetry and fiction, and small-press publishing.
In addition, Swartwout established and is the publisher of the Southeast Missouri University Press, the creator and administrator of Southeast’s small-press publishing minor and editor for the national, semi-annual literary journal, “Big Muddy.”
The Southeast Missouri State University Press, founded in 2001, serves both as a first-rate publisher in this underpublished region and as a working laboratory for students interested in learning the art and skills of literary publishing. The Press supports the minor degree program in small-press publishing for undergraduate students in any major who wish to acquire the basic skills for independent-press publishing and editing. Swartwout has established four national writing competitions administered annually through the Press: the Copperdome Poetry Competition, the Mighty River Short Story Award, the Wilda Hearne Flash Fiction Award and the Nilsen Prize for a First Novel. Several of the University Press’s books have won national awards.
Swartwout is the director of internships in English, director of publishing internships and advisor for the student annual literary magazine, “Journey.” She initiated and serves as the coordinator of the Journey Student Reading Series. She has directed 40 graduate theses.
Swartwout has plethora of professional accomplishments that complement her contributions to Southeast. She has authored numerous published books, poems, short stories, essays, reviews and interviews as well as given many scholarly presentations. Currently, she is writing a full-length poetry manuscript, a collection of short fiction, a textbook and a nonfiction book. She also frequently judges competitions and presents creative writing workshops regularly throughout the region.
She maintains memberships in professional organizations, including the Southeast Missouri’s Writers Guild of which she is president and co-founder, Associated Writing Programs, the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses, and the Ozark Writers League. She also has served on numerous University committees.
Swartwout has received many honors and awards for her creative writing and academic achievements, and her name is published in various writer directories, including Gale Research’s “Contemporary Authors” encyclopedia. She was nominated for the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce’s University Educator of the Year Award.
Since coming to Southeast, she has procured over $210,000 in grants and donations for academic programming.
She received her Bachelor of Arts in literature from Knox College in Illinois and her Master of Arts in creative writing along with her doctoral degree from Illinois State University.
