KRCU to Broadcast ‘Piano Jazz Rising Stars’by News Bureau on
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Jan. 3, 2012 -- KRCU at Southeast Missouri State University announces plans to air “Piano Jazz Rising Stars,” a series focused on the young "legends" of today who are adventurously taking jazz into the 21st century. “Piano Jazz Rising Stars” will air Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m., beginning Jan. 10.
Following in the finest tradition of “Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz,” host Jon Weber combines thoughtful conversation and great performances with the leading young musicians on the scene. Guests include pianist Taylor Eigsti, guitarist Julian Lage, alto saxophonist/vocalist Grace Kelly, vocalist Sachal Vasandani, and this year's Thelonious Monk Competition winner, pianist Kris Bowers.
Weber, who has filled in as a guest host for Marian McPartland on numerous occasions, brings a vast knowledge of jazz history, flawless musicianship, and the ability to coax the very best performances from the amazing artists who visit the show each week. McPartland has invited Weber to succeed her as host for this all-new series.
Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune arts critic, wrote the following in his Nov. 8, 2011, column:
"It's hard to imagine a better choice for this plum assignment than Weber, considering his rare combination of gifts: brilliant technique, photographic memory, enormous repertory of songs and the ability to read perfectly at sight virtually any score placed before him."
KRCU General Manager Dan Woods said, “We are excited to offer this new jazz series to our listeners and we believe it will be a great addition to our schedule.”
