Southeast Students to Perform ‘Così fan Tutte’by News Bureau on
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Jan. 9, 2012 – The Southeast Missouri State University Department of Music will present Mozart’s comic masterpiece, “Così fan Tutte” at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 21 and 3 p.m. Jan. 22 in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at Southeast’s River Campus. The opera is part of the Southeast Student Ensembles Series and will feature a student cast along with faculty member, Dr. Tim Schmidt.
“Così fan Tutte,” was first performed in 1790, and has remained a staple of the stage due to its beautiful music and delightful story. The title, Così fan Tutte, is translated as “Thus Do They All” or “The School for Lovers.” Christopher Goeke, chair of the Department of Music at Southeast and director of this show, said, “Così” is a farcical show about fidelity in the face of trickery. In this show, two young men agree to a bet with the older, wiser and, somewhat jaded, Don Alfonso, played by Schmidt. As a part of the bet, the two must follow the instructions of Alfonso as he tries to prove that all women will eventually be unfaithful. For example, they must disguise themselves as flamboyant Italian suitors and pursue each others’ fiancées. Chaos and laughter ensue as the women do their best to resist these passionate, exotic new lovers trying everything possible to get the women to submit to their wooing.
The cast is comprised of students from music, theatre and dance, and other majors on campus. The opera will be presented in English and will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra of faculty, students and community members conducted by Dr. Steve Hendricks.
