Music Academy Hires New Teachers for New Spring Semester Programsby News Bureau on
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Jan. 24, 2011 -- The Southeast Missouri Music Academy announces the hiring of new teachers for two new music programs.
Jay Contrino will offer lessons for drum set, and Trevor Smith will teach an instrumental jazz improvisation class.
"The Academy is really excited to offer these new musical experiences for students in our area,” said Academy Director Rebecca Fulgham. “We have never offered instruction in these areas, and both classes promise to be a popular addition to the Academy's services."
Contrino is a relative newcomer to Cape Girardeau, and brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge about jazz music and performing on drum set. Contrino plays with the Sultans of Swing at Buckner Brewing Co. and regularly at Lodo's , both in downtown Cape Girardeau. He is also an adjunct faculty in Department of Music. The Academy will partner with him through the Contrino Drum School, to offer lessons for students ages 9 and up. Students must have their own drum set.
Trevor Smith is a music composition major in Southeast's Department of Music. He has established himself as one of the top jazz saxophone players in the area. His jazz improvisation class is open to non-beginner instrumental students in grades 9-12. Anyone who plays a band instrument, including pitched percussion, is welcome to attend the class beginning on Monday, Feb. 13 at 4 p.m.
