CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., March 7, 2012 – The Southeast Missouri State University Percussion Ensemble and Steel Drum Band, under the direction of Shane Mizicko, will present its annual spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 22, in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at the River Campus.
The program will include works for percussion ensemble alone, such as Michael Colgrass’ “Three Brothers” and Elliot Del Borgo’s “Introduction and Rondo.” The concert will also include works for percussion ensemble and strings, such as the beautiful lullaby for percussion ensemble and cello, “Sweet Dreams, Elizabeth Lee,” by Gabriel Musella and “Minus Nine” by David Madeira, which combines the echoing sounds of vibraphone, three marimbas and a traditional string quartet to create a unique and memorable musical experience. Michael Daugherty’s “Lex,” which is a dynamic and forceful work for electric violin soloist Brandon Christensen, the Percussion Ensemble, synthesizer and electric bass, will also be performed.
The concert will conclude with the traditional sounds of the Caribbean as the Southeast Steel Drum Band takes the stage to perform “Jump in the Line,” “Under the Boardwalk” and “Rant and Rave.”
