CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., April 12, 2012 – The Moscow Festival Ballet will bring the enduring literary classic “Don Quixote” to life at 7:30 p.m. April 27 in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus.
The Moscow Festival Ballet was founded in 1989 when legendary principal dancer Sergei Radchenko of the Bolshoi Ballet sought to realize his vision by bringing together the highest classical elements of the great Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet companies in an independent new company within the framework of Russian classic ballet. Leading dancers from across the Russias have forged under Radchenko’s direction staging new productions of timeless classics such as “Don Quixote.”
“Don Quixote,” last performed in 2000, will be brought to life in Cape Girardeau as just one stop on the company’s latest four-month tour across the United States.
Since its inception , the Moscow Festival Ballet has completed two tours of Europe, with performances in Italy, France, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands, and two tours of the United Kingdom. The company has also performed with great success in Turkey and in Greece, and recently completed a two-month tour of Japan, Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong.
The Moscow Festival Ballet has toured extensively throughout the United States, beginning with a Coast-to-Coast tour in 1997 and returning in 2001, 2004 and 2006.
Bob Cerchio, assistant director at the River Campus, explained, "Columbia Artists Management, Inc., is one of the top five booking agencies in the world. They continually bring the finest national and international acts to the United States. The Moscow Ballet Festival is a marvelous Russian ballet company we are privileged to bring to Cape Girardeau.”
The Moscow Festival Ballet performed “Sleeping Beauty” at the River Campus in 2010.
“It is an outstanding companyᾰone which normally tours only to major cities,” Cerchio said. “I hope the people of the region will take advantage of yet another magnificent full-length ballet."
