‘A Game of Chance’ Featured in Spring 2012 Opera Workshopby News Bureau on
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., April 16, 2012 – The Opera Workshop of the Department of Music at Southeast Missouri State University will present its spring 2012 program at 3 p.m. April 29 in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Music Recital Hall at Southeast’s River Campus.
The featured work for the afternoon will be a one-act opera by American composer Seymour Barab, “A Game of Chance.” The 35-minute opera follows three women who are discontented with their present lives as they dream of wealth, fame and love. The Representative, an eternal messenger of Fate, brings to each her dearest wish. Even then, all are dissatisfied.
As the publisher states, “The moral of this comic opera: We all want too little or too much.”
Rounding out the afternoon will be scenes from other operas, including “La Périchole” by Jacques Offenbach, “Chip and his Dog” by Gian Carlo Menotti, “Pirates of Penzance” by W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, and “The Merry Wives of Windsor” by Otto Nicolai. The four scenes and “A Game of Chance” will be performed in English with piano accompaniment.
