Southeast Announces Winners of 34th Annual Math Field Dayby News Bureau on
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., April 26, 2012 – The Southeast Missouri State University Department of Mathematics announces winners of the 34th annual Math Field Day, held on Tuesday, April 17.
Students from 24 area high schools competed in Math Field Day. The event began at 9 a.m. and concluded with an awards ceremony at 1 p.m. The day included both team and individual events. At noon, students engaged in a problem-solving event, Mathletics. All events took place in the Show Me Center.
A new award, The Sigma Award, was given beginning this year. The small school award went to Saxony Lutheran, and the large school award went to Herrin. To determine the winner, points were awarded to those individuals and teams earning first, second and third places for each event. During the awards ceremony, the school in the each division with the greatest total points received the Sigma Award trophy.
Approximately 537 students competed in a multitude of areas including algebra I, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry, word problems, sets and logic, exponential and log functions, matrices and determinants, computational mathematics, elementary data analysis, probability, mental arithmetic, non-routine problem solving, analytic geometry, number bases, number theory, hand calculators and calculus.
Area schools that competed in this year’s contest were Anna-Jonesboro, Arcadia Valley, Bell City, Bernie, Campbell, Cape Central, Caruthersville, Eagle Ridge Christian School, Farmington, Fredericktown R-I, Herrin, Leopold R-III, Malden, Marion, North St. Francois County R-I, Notre Dame Regional High School, Oak Ridge R-VI, Puxico, Saxony Lutheran School, Scott City R-I, Sikeston, Ste. Genevieve, Viburnum C-4 and Zalma.
