Sindy Puckett of Jefferson City, Mo., will graduate with a Master of Arts in English. Puckett, who had a cornea transplant, is the first blind graduate student to complete a master’s degree at Southeast. She received a Bachelor of Arts in journalism at Lincoln University and is a first generation master’s degree recipient. Eleanor, a friendly yellow Labrador retriever and Leader Dog, guides Puckett around campus. Eleanor will be dressed in a cap and gown specially tailored for the occasion by Herff Jones. Tyler Oberlander of Imperial, Mo., and his twin sister, Corey Oberlander, also of Imperial, Mo., will graduate together. Tyler will graduate with a Bachelor of Science with a major in mass communication, advertising option. Elizabeth Cartwright of Kelso, Mo., will graduate with a Bachelor of General Studies. Cartwright attended Southeast as a full-time student from 1992-1994. She returned to college in the summer of 2008 to take online classes and complete her degree. Without online classes, Cartwright says she would never have been able to earn her degree. As an online student, she was able to be a working wife and mother while working towards her college degree. Today, her children are able to know the importance of education because of their mother’s dedication. Cartwright plans to go into non-profit or foundation work. Cory King of Fredericktown, Mo., will graduate with a Bachelor of Science with a major in biology, microbiology, cell, molecular and biotechnical options. He lives 60 miles from Southeast and is a commuting student. During his four years at Southeast, he clocked nearly 900 driving hours and 52,000 miles roundtrip commuting to campus. Lauren Payton of Kansas City, Mo., is one of two students who will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in commercial photography. They are the first students to graduate with this major. Christina Ulrich of Cape Girardeau, Mo., will graduate with a Bachelor of Science with a major in biology, biomedical sciences option. She is the third in her family to graduate from Southeast. Ulrich’s mother graduated and became a nurse, and Ulrich’s sister graduated to become a dentist. Ulrich plans to become an optometrist in four years. He is 56 years old and has always believed that if you really want something bad enough, you can achieve it.
