Regents Approve Promotionsby News Bureau on
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Oct. 22, 2012 -- The Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents Oct. 19 approved the promotion of two University staff members due to the announced retirement of Dr. Dennis Holt, Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Success and Dean of Students.
Holt will officially relinquish his role as vice president effective December 31, 2012, and will serve as Special Assistant to the President for Institutional Research and Assessment until December 31, 2013. According to University President Kenneth W. Dobbins, Holt will continue to report to the president and will work on several special projects including institutional research and assessment, and advising services.
Dr. Debbie Below, Associate Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Success and Director of Admissions, was promoted by the Board of Regents to Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Success and Dean of Students, and Dr. Bruce Skinner, Director of Residence Life, was promoted to Assistant Vice President for Student Success and Director of Residence Life both effective January 1, 2013.
Holt, who has been at the University for more than 36 years, came to Southeast from the University of Oregon in 1976 as an assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religion. He has served as a faculty member; department chair; the founding Director of the Writing Outcomes Program; Assistant, Associate, Vice, and Interim Provost; Director of Assessment; Dean of Extended Learning; Executive Director of the Southeast Missouri Educational Consortium; Vice President for Administration and Enrollment Management; and currently serves as the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Success and Dean of Students. Additionally, throughout his career at Southeast, he has continued to teach – both face to face and online.
According to Dobbins, “Dr. Holt has truly been one of the ‘go-to’ people for our University for more than three decades. Dennis has always been willing to take on any assignment that is in the best interests of Southeast and our students. Even though we understand his desire to retire so he can concentrate more fully on his traveling and a myriad of interests, I have asked him not to leave the University without first tapping him one more time for his expertise, and providing us some time for transitioning his duties.”
Below began her career at Southeast as an admissions counselor in 1990, and served the admissions program and the University in a variety of capacities including acting Director of Admissions and acting Assistant Director of Residence life. In 1994, she was named Director of Admissions at Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Mo., and in 1995, she was named Director of Admissions and Financial Aid at that institution.
In 2002, Below rejoined the admissions team at Southeast as Director of Admissions, and later assumed responsibilities for the Office of the Registrar, Residence Life, Recreation Services, New Student Programs, Career Linkages and the Office of International Education and Services.
A graduate of Southeast, Below earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Missouri.
Skinner joined the Southeast staff in 2000 as the Assistant Director for facilities in the Office of Residence Life. He was named Director of Residence Life in 2006, with supervision of all residence life facilities, the Student Recreation Center, and administration of several University contracts, including the dining contract between the University and Chartwells, and the campus health clinic contract with SoutheastHEALTH.
He received both his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Southeast, and his doctoral degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis from the University of Missouri.
According to Dobbins, “We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Below to the University’s executive team. She has a wealth of knowledge in the area of enrollment management and student services, and she will bring a breadth of experience to our University’s initiatives.
We are also pleased that Dr. Skinner has agreed to accept additional responsibilities. He has done an outstanding job in Residence Life and has been instrumental in elevating and expanding our residence life programs. During his tenure at Southeast, he has successfully expanded his scope of responsibilities. Additionally, he is an advisor to several campus student organizations, and he has a strong personal and professional interest in the ‘outside-of-the-classroom’ experience for Southeast students.”
