Charming Comedy ‘The Miss Firecracker Contest’ in Rust Theatre April 3-7by News Bureau on
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., March 19, 2012 – Beth Henley’s comic volcano of a play, “The Miss Firecracker Contest,” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. April 3-6 and 2 p.m. April 6-7 in the Wendy Kurka Rust Flexible Theatre at the Southeast Missouri State University River Campus.
This warm and quirky comedy follows the irrepressible Carnelle Scott, a young woman in Brookhaven, Miss., as she attempts to win The Miss Firecracker Contest on the 4th of July. Carnelle has made some mistakes in her young life that have earned her the not-so-nice nickname “The Hot Tamale,” but she’s sure her reputation can be mended if she wins the Miss Firecracker Contest. Her well-meaning but dysfunctional family and friends come to her aid with hilarious and sometimes disastrous results. This charming and warm-hearted comedy shows it is better to be yourself than pretend to be someone you are not.
“’The Miss Firecracker Contest’ is Beth Henley’s funny, quirky, and heart-warming comedy about Carnelle Scott, a charming but down-on-her-luck young woman in a small Mississippi town who hopes to repair her soiled reputation by winning The Miss Firecracker Contest on the Fourth of July,” said Dr. Phil Nacy, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance. “It won’t be easy, but her odd, dysfunctional family and friends set out to do all they can to help Carnelle make her dream come true, sometimes with unexpected and hilarious consequences. ‘The Miss Firecracker Contest’ will make you laugh and, perhaps, draw a sympathetic tear or two. This production offers a fun evening inside the heart and mind of a lovable wanna-be Southern Belle.
The play is populated by offbeat, but vital, larger-than-life characters. This must-see comedy explores the themes of femininity, beauty and the need to be accepted.
The production contains adult content.
