River Campus Hosts Fifth Annual New Student Showcaseby News Bureau on
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Sept. 9, 2013 – New, freshmen and transfer students who are majoring in theatre and dance at Southeast Missouri State University will perform in the fifth annual “New Student Showcase” at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 21 in the Wendy Kurka Rust Flexible Theatre at Southeast’s River Campus.
“It’s a chance for new theatre and dance students to introduce themselves to the theatre and dance faculty and students,” said Dr. Phil Nacy, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance. “Rather than just anonymously appearing among the theatre and dance majors, the Showcase allows a new student to present his or her talents and skills to the rest of the Department so we know who they are and get an idea of what they can do. It’s similar in intent to our yearly Senior Showcase that allows graduating seniors to be seen by New York City casting directors and agents. The showcase is meant to give faculty and upper-level students a chance to see the new students perform.”
The “New Student Showcase” will feature students presenting scenes from a play, monologue, song or dance. Faculty members choreograph pieces for theatre students, while musical theatre students have the option to sing.
“It sometimes takes a lot of effort and exposure for actors, dancers and designers to get recognized when they join a new group, so by performing at the showcase, they get a head start merging into the talent pool. It’s a chance to jump immediately into the action of the department by putting their talents on display from day one. It’s a big benefit to any new student to participate,” Nacy said.
The Department of Theatre and Dance sponsors the event each year.
“It’s very common for parents and relatives of the performers to make the trip to Cape to see the show,” Nacy said. “It’s a fun, fast-paced evening.”
The event is free and open to the general public.
