CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Sept. 13, 2013 – Athletics, music, magicians, movies and food are among the highlights of activities planned for all ages and members of the family to celebrate during Family Weekend Sept. 27-28 at Southeast Missouri State University.
Family Weekend began in 1977 as “Parents’ Weekend” and was a weekend for parents to visit their football players on the campus. It has since developed into a weekend of activities for everyone related to the University and students.
“Family Weekend is an important weekend during the fall semester,” said Michele Irby, director of Campus Life. “It is an opportunity for our students to invite their families into their college experience and share it with them. Through a variety of family focused activities we hope to open up the campus to our Southeast students’ families.”
Two activities will launch Family Weekend. The first event is at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 27 and is the “Houck Filled House.” Fans can help Southeast break the volleyball single-game home attendance record when the Redhawk women’s volleyball team takes on Eastern Illinois. General admission is $5 and student admission is free.
Southeast’s Student Activities Council also will host a showing of “Iron Man 3” at 11:30 p.m. Sept. 27 at Cape West 14. Parents can join their student for a free movie and snacks.
Events on Saturday, Sept. 28, will get under way with a complimentary continental breakfast with President Kenneth W. Dobbins at 9 a.m. in the University Center.

Bus tours of the campus and Cape Girardeau will be offered throughout the day, departing from the University Center at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. Participants will learn the rich history of the University and the Cape Girardeau community. The tours will include the main campus, River Campus and downtown area.
Activities will move to the University Center beginning at 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will include magicians, music, campus tours, department booths, student performances and more.
