Wind Symphony Performing ‘The British Are Coming!’by News Bureau on
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Oct. 21, 2013 – “The British Are Coming!” will be performed by the Southeast Wind Symphony at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29 in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus.
The concert, under the direction of Martin Reynolds, Southeast associate professor of music and the director of bands at the University, will feature music written entirely by British composers.
“I am excited to open the season for the Southeast Wind Symphony by programming significant musical literature from some of Britain’s most important composers. Beautiful melody, regal majesty, folk song and country dance are just some of the musical expressions that will be performed by members of the ensemble,” Reynolds said.
According to the musical score, songs will include the energetic musical tribute to master composer Sir Malcolm Arnold “Along an English Countryside.” Also, pieces from the William Byrd Suite will be performed, including “The Earl of Oxford’s March” and “Second Suite,” an upbeat performance using folk music and folk dance tunes throughout the piece.
The last performances will be Sir Edward Elgar’s “The Engima Variations,” as well as the “March of the Mogul Emperors,” an excerpt from the composer’s imperial masque “The Crown of India.”
Reynolds says that he hopes the audience gains “an appreciation for some of the great instrumental British music composed by some of Britain’s greatest composers. They are considered to be some of the Western world’s great composers as well,” he said.
“Join us for an evening of great music presented by the hard-working instrumental musicians of Southeast and the Department of Music,” Reynolds said.
The event will last approximately one hour.
To prepare, the members of the band have been rehearsing twice a week this semester. The Southeast Wind Symphony performs the highest level of wind literature, including standard wind band and contemporary literature, according to Reynolds. The band performs two concerts per semester at the River Campus.
Auditions for the ensemble are held at the beginning of each semester and are open to majors and non-majors. Fifty-two of the top brass, percussion and woodwind players on the Southeast campus are selected.
