Schedule of the Day

First STEP is held in the University Center on the corner of Henderson Street and Normal Ave. Plan to spend approximately eight hours on campus for your First STEP program. Check-in for First STEP is at 7:45 a.m. and the program will be over at approximately 5 p.m.

PLEASE NOTE THIS SCHEDULE IS FOR THE NOVEMBER 21, 2008 AND JANUARY 17, 2009 DATES ONLY. A NEW SCHEDULE WILL BE POSTED FOR THE FALL 2009 DATES AT A LATER TIME.

This check-in time is allotted for students who need to take the Writing Placement Exam. Students will receive a packet of information including a schedule of the day, concern surveys, a student information booklet, as well as many other important materials.

Academic Hall
At this time, students will be led to Academic Hall to take the Writing Placement Exam. Our professional writing staff assess students' current writing ability to determine an appropriate composition class for each student. Students will be informed of their course placement during advising.

This session focuses on issues related to the transition process for students and family alike. It is facilitated by Judy St. John, Director of the Center for Health & Counseling. Staff members from Health & Counseling, Residence Life, Learning Assistance, Campus Safety and Substance Abuse Prevention Education comprise a panel of experts ready and willing to discuss services available to the student body.

Students return from the Writing Placement Exam to rejoin their guests for a Welcome & Overview from Assistant Director of New Student Programs, Theresa Haug Belvin.
10:05 - 10:35 am Southeast Student 101
for all students
Various Locations
Students will be broken into groups to meet with one of our experienced Orientation Leaders - seasoned veterans of the university. They will have an opportunity to ask questions about the university ranging from campus involvement to classroom success.

Sandy Hinkle, Registrar, with one of our Orientation Leaders, discusses the importance of campus involvement and the academic demands of being a student at Southeast. Mrs. Hinkle offers her unique experience of being both a parent of a former Southeast student and an administrator with years of experience working with both students and families on our campus.
10:40 - 11:40 am Jump Start Your Southeast Schedule

It is time now to learn more about how to select classes. This session is presented by Southeast Registrar, Sandy Hinkle, Dr. David Starrett, Dean of University Studies & Academic Information Services, Director of Student Transitions & the First-Year Experience, Dr. Leon Book, and Dr. Craig Roberts, Director of the Honors Program. They will describe how the University Studies system works, how students choose their classes, as well as additional information pertinent to selecting a class schedule that fits a student's specific needs.
11:40 a.m. - 12:40 p.m. Lunch & Concurrent Sessions
for all students & guests
Various Locations
There are several activities occurring at this time. Students and guests may eat lunch and attend a series of sessions from learning about the Honors Program to attending our "Info-to-Go" Fair. During this time, students may also opt to take the optional Math Challenge Exam or have their ID pictures taken.
12:45 - 1:05 p.m. Southeast Campus Connections
for all students & guests
Various Locations
Whether you are a student living in the residence halls or a student commuting from home, we have a session for you. Bruce Skinner, Director of Residence Life will provide an overview of campus living. If you are a commuting to campus, a staff member from the Academic Support Centers will offer tips on how to get involved and succeed as a Southeast commuter student.
1:10 - 1:15 p.m. Cape Girardeau Welcomes You
for all students & guests
UC Ballroom
A member of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to the city. The Chamber of Commerce will explain some of the city's many attractions and resources for both students and their families to enjoy during their stay at Southeast.
1:15 - 1:45 p.m. Show-Me the Money
for all students & guests
UC Ballroom
Do you have questions about financial aid, scholarships, or even the FAFSA? This session will provide an overview of financing college. If guests have specific questions about a student's financial aid, members of Student Financial Services are even available for questions after the session.
1:45 p.m. Southeast Scheduling
for all students

At this point in the day, students are broken into colleges for advising. They will have an opportunity to meet with our knowledgeable advisors to develop a schedule tailored to fit each student's needs.
3:15, 3:45, & 4:15 p.m. Walking Tours
for all students & guests
University Center
Third Floor
At the end of the day, students and their guests have the option of taking a walking tour around the campus with one of our Orientation Leaders. Tours do include a circle around campus with a stop by Towers to view one of the residence hall rooms.
