Parent-to-Parent - A Southeast Blog

Photo of MySoutheast Web site Getting Grades
I pay my college son’s tuition bills, his car payment and car insurance. He’s on my health insurance policy and I claim him on my tax return. And even though he’s living in the residence hall, he still brings home his dirty laundry, raids my pantry to take food back to campus, and periodically asks me for spending money. And yet, I don’t get to see his grades. What’s the deal? If I pay his tuition – the checks written to the university are always from my personal bank account – why can’t I have access to his grades?

You are fast approaching that time when you’ll be packing up the car, van, truck or trailer and heading to campus for the ritual “move in” day for college. If you are the parent of a new freshman, you may be having mixed feelings...

Ok parents, it’s time to pull out the W-2s, the tax returns and the checkbook. As I reminded you in my last blog, the March 1st financial aid priority deadline is fast approaching. If your student will need any type of financial assistance for the Fall 2007 semester, you need to complete the Free Application for Financial Aid Assistance (FAFSA) now!

So mom and dad, you have more influence than you may think you do according to a survey from U.S. News and World Report. According to a survey of 600 students who scored more than 1100 on the SAT, students are more influenced by campus visits, parents (moms more than dads), word of mouth and college Web sites than they are rankings, high school counselors and teachers.

Do you have a high school student who is naysaying the pursuit of a college education? You may want to direct him/her to the latest Census Bureau report which says a bachelor’s degree is worth about $23,000 a year. That’s not what your child will make if he/she gets a college degree. That’s the difference in salary between what your child would earn with a college degree versus what someone with only a high school diploma would earn.

Photo of a family at Family Weekend Family Weekend
Family Weekend is fast approaching here at Southeast Missouri State University. If you’re new to the parenting of a college student, you may not be aware that almost all colleges and universities set aside a weekend each fall specifically to welcome to campus the parents and families of students. What started on this campus some 25 years ago as a weekend just for the parents of football players has evolved through time to a family weekend where not only the parents are welcomed, but so, too, are the brothers, sisters, grandparents and extended family.

If you’re reading this, chances are you are a parent helping your son or daughter explore college options. I’ve been in your shoes – in fact, I’ve been there twice. And let me reassure you that you can survive your child’s senior year of high school, the college search process and empty-nest syndrome and live to celebrate your child’s graduation from college.
