Send notes, family news and packages often.  Every college student loves to receive mail, even if they’ve talked with you via cell phone several times a day and e-mailed you at least once each day.  It still causes a great deal of excitement every time they get a written letter or a package from home!

Tips for Mail and Package Service

1. Call to let your student know a package is on the way.
2. Always mark your items with your return address and mail them so the return address and postmark are consistent.
3. Address the package properly (see above). Do not use “SEMO” or “Southeast Missouri State University” in the address, as this will misdirect mail to the University's main processing facility.  Your package will still make it to your student, but it may take an additional two to four days.
4. Do not send cash through the mail.
5. Do not send items that could create a bulge, lump or stain or items that could leak liquid or powder. If sending a liquid or powder item is essential, pack the item in a spill-proof, sealed bag to contain any spill.
6. Pack items carefully and use appropriate insurance.
7. When shipping battery-operated devices, remove the batteries before shipping.
8. Consult the shipper before sending any potentially hazardous materials such as flammable liquid, chemicals or pressurized canisters.
9. If your student is missing mail or packages, start by having a trace put on the items by the sender at the point of origin.
10. If the trace indicates the item reached the University and the student has not received it, she/he should immediately contact the hall director for the student’s residence hall.  The hall director will assist in finding the package or, if necessary, contacting the University Police.

Mail is delivered and distributed twice per day to the students’ locked mailboxes, Monday through Saturday. For packages and special delivery items (registered mail, postage-due, express mail, telegrams, flowers, balloons, etc.), students receive a written notice in the mailbox and must present their Southeast ID to retrieve the item during posted pick-up hours. Mail is held at the hall office during break periods and is not forwarded. Mail (not including bulk-rate items) is forwarded during the summer, if the student moves to another residence hall, if the student is released from the housing agreement, or if the student leaves the University. Students are responsible for leaving a proper forwarding address and are encouraged to fill out a forwarding card with the US Postal Service.  Note that summer mail forwarding may add many days to delivery time; students should change their address with the sender to prevent delays.
