About Us

The Law Enforcement Academy at Southeast Missouri State University is dedicated to meeting the training needs of all law enforcement officers and agencies in the University service area. The Academy, a Missouri Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) approved provider, has provided basic and specialized training for more than 2,500 law enforcement officers since the Academy was established in 1987.

College Credit Now an Option for ALL Academies

The Law Enforcement Academy is pleased to announce that students attending the academy, beginning in 2013, will have the option of taking the academy for college credit as part of a four year degree program. Students who choose this option will have to be admitted to both the University and the Academy, meeting the admission requirements of both, and must have already COMPLETED 24 credit hours. Upon successful completion of the academy, the student will receive 24 hours of credit towards a bachelor's degree. Partial credit will not be given.

Students who choose not to take advantage of the college credits need only apply to the academy. (Please note - The college credit option is NOT retroactive. The student must sign up for this option PRIOR to the beginning of the semester.) Call for details.

Financial Aid is available to those who qualify through several sources depending on your enrollment status. For more information about Sallie Mae (NON-credit seeking students only), Federal Student Loans and Pell Grants (credit seeking students only), and payment plans, click here.

Class "A" Peace Officer License

Upon successful completion of our 720 hour academy and after passing their state licensing exam (P.O.S.T. Test) students will receive a Class "A" Peace Officer License from the State of Missouri.  Not only does our training cover the mandated 600 hours as required by P.O.S.T., we also offer additional training in Patrol Rifle, Datamaster, TASER, LIDAR and Hostage Negotiation as part of our basic academy.  In addition, we have increased training hours in several areas with practical excercises in areas such as Stress Combat, Ground Fighting and Vehicle Stops.

Class Formats & Costs

The academy currently has two formats, a weekday class and a weekend class.  Both classes are 720 hours.

The weekday classes are held twice per year and start in January and August/September of each year.  Both of these classes meet Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for a period of 18 weeks and are held at our Cape Girardeau campus.

The weekend classes are held once per year at our Kennett campus.  This class will start in late August or early September and run approximately 10 months.  The weekend class meets as follows:

  • Friday's 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Saturday's 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday's 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The cost for the class depends on whether or not the student is taking the academy for credit bearing or not.  The non-credit bearing class is $4500.  The credit bearing class is tied directly to the current tuition rate and therefore varies.  Tuition for both classes includes uniforms, books, testing materials and ammunition.
