CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., March 5, 2009 -- The Department of Industrial and Engineering Technology at Southeast Missouri State University is inviting counselors, directors and instructors who teach math, science, computer and industrial technology related subjects to attend a free program March 26 entitled “Exploring the World of Industrial and Engineering Technology @ Southeast.”
The event will be held in the Otto and Della Seabaugh Polytechnic Building on the Southeast campus, with the program beginning at 9 a.m. The event will run through 1:30 p.m. and will include lunch.
Dr. Ragu Athinarayanan, chair of the Department of Industrial and Engineering Technology, said the event will highlight the programs the department offers on the main campus in Cape Girardeau, Mo., in St. Louis and on the Web; explore available opportunities for students; and explain the math and science required by the discipline. Participants will have the opportunity to tour the Seabaugh Polytechnic Building. Presentations will include "What is Technology and Engineering Technology Disciplines?" and "Math & Science in our Discipline." In addition to the normal program, he says he will discuss a new competition in the department to be offered to high school students in the future.
"We would like counselors' and teachers' input on how we can best help them build their students' levels of excitement and knowledge in the technological fields," he said.
The program will include two live demonstration sessions in Southeast's state-of-the-art facilities. Demonstrations will be conducted in the areas of:
• Construction management and facilities management, including project management, residential and commercial architectural drafting, construction techniques and survey practices, and facilities management
• Electronics, including telecommunications, networking, digital electronics, and power and motor control
• Computer Graphics, including multimedia, Web design, animation, graphic design, photography and video
• Mechanical and Manufacturing Systems, including plastics, materials testing, robotics, and mechanical design using the latest software and prototyping technologies.
Amanda Eller, coordinator of special programs and services in Southeast's School of Polytechnic Studies, said that by reaching educators, a larger population of students might be reached who, otherwise, might not consider a major in the School of Polytechnic Studies. “Too often, students and educators hear the name of our school and don't understand what we have to offer students - great majors for great career opportunities,” she said. “We educate our students in the high-tech areas of computers, graphics, engineering technology, management and networking -- just to name a few.”
Those interested in participating are asked to contact the School of Polytechnic Studies Advising Center at (573) 651-5930 or polytech@semo.edu by March 20.
