Southeast Missouri State University derives its regional accreditation status from the Higher Learning Commission. Continuing accreditation requires each HLC institution to complete a comprehensive self study and to submit to peer review on a schedule determined by the Commission.

Southeast completed a self study in 2000 and was granted re-accreditation with the next visit scheduled in 10 years (the maximum allowed).  In 2006, Southeast moved into the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) and has its next site visit in 2019-2020
