Intramural Sports Officials

All you need to do to become an intramural sports official is attend the introductory meeting and training sessions for each sport you wish to work. Starting pay for Intramural Sports Officials is $7.50. Bring a Picture ID and either your Social Security Card or Birth Certificate. In 2011, we employed over 140 different students to assist us in the many programs and facilities that we manage. In the past 10 years, we have paid out over $1,000,000 to SEMO students in the form of salary for positions we administer. About Southeast and Cape Girardeau: Southeast Missouri State University is a university of 11,000 students located in Cape Girardeau, Missouri along the Mississippi River. The University, founded in 1873, offers over 150 different areas of study and academic disciplines.  Cape Girardeau is a town of approximately 40,000 residents.  We have quick and easy access to Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas.  We are 1.5 hours south of St. Louis and 2.5 hours north of Memphis.

About Recreation Services: Based out of the 135,000 square feet Student Recreation Center-North complex, the department has seven full-time employees, four graduate assistants, and over 160 student employees.  Major program areas include Fitness and Wellness, Intramural Sports, Sport Clubs, Outdoor Adventure, Sport Clubs, and much more. Our state-of-the-art Student Aquatic Center, which provides leisure, lap, and spa capabilities for users, also contains an infinity edge, rope swing, bouldering wall, and zipline for recreational use. The Student Recreation Center-South also houses approximately 20,000 square feet of activity space that includes a fitness room and support areas. The Intramural Sports Complex contains over 20 acres of outdoor field space (including lighted softball, flag football, and soccer fields).

Primary Function: To provide primary program leadership and support for the overall group fitness, personal training and wellness programs.

Primary Position Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate group fitness instructors and personal trainers.
  • Supervise group fitness and personal training program, and skill development courses.
  • Create and administer safe fitness programs, staff manuals, and staff training program.
  • Coordinate all statistical information for program participation.
  • Maintain all equipment inventory and research and purchase new fitness-related equipment.
  • Coordinate and assist in several fitness-related special events.
  • Assist in annual wellness-based university employee/student health screenings and wellness fair.
  • Assist the Assistant Director with management of the overall university student, faculty and staff wellness programming.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: The candidate will be currently (nationally) certified as a group exercise instructor or a personal trainer (ACE, AFAA, ACSM); teaching  experience in various group exercise classes as an instructor/leader and training experience as a personal trainer.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience working within a recreational sports setting, coordination/execution of training programs for group exercise instructors and personal trainers, and direct management of student employees.

Academic Information: Master’s degree options include Higher Education Administration (Sports Management option), Community Wellness, Exercise Science, Public Administration and Business Administration. A cumulative 2.75 GPA is required. A 3.0 is preferred. Specific degree requirements may differ according to the academic major.

Benefits: A complete in-state (Missouri residents) tuition remission is available for Missouri/Non-Missouri residents and a stipend of approximately $8,348.00 for nine months (all books and dedicated student fees are the responsibility of the graduate assistant and not paid by the department). Non-Missouri residents will only receive an in-state waiver only. Additional income for breaks and summer months may be available. Professional development assistance may also be available.

Evaluation/Renewal: This position is renewable for one year pending a complete evaluation of candidate performance and duties.  Termination or non-renewal of the assistantship may result if specific duties are not accomplished or the candidate receives documented poor performance reviews. Candidate must be available to start no later than Monday, August 17, 2015.
