Lifeguard Training
This course uses American Red Cross instruction in basic lifeguarding skills. Topics to be covered include care for injuries, illness and medical emergencies. Skills of water rescue will also be taught, emphasizing pool lifeguarding only. Lifeguarding courses are conducted by American Red Cross lifeguarding instructors. Course completion does not guarantee employment. This is a 30-hour course. Registration is at the Student Recreation Center-North main office.
Course Prerequisites
- 15 years of age
- 300-yard swim, (100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick; 100 yards of breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence; 100 yards of either the front crawl or breaststroke or a combination of front crawl and breaststroke)
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound brick, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, with 1 minute, 40 seconds.

Water Safety Instructor
This course is designed to certify students as American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors. Students completing thiscourse will be eligible to teach all the Youth Lesson progressions, Parent and Child Lessons, Community WaterSafety, and WSI Aide.Course
Prerequisites:-Be at least 16 years of age on or before the last day of the instructor course.-Pass a written test and skills test, which includes basic rescue skills.

Lifeguard Instructor
This course uses American Red Cross instruction to train instructor candidates to teach basic-level Lifeguarding,Waterfront Lifeguarding, Waterpark Lifeguarding and Shallow Water Attendant (all including first aid), LifeguardManagement, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Administering Emergency Oxygen, Bloodborne PathogensTraining: Preventing Disease Transmission and Basic Water Rescue courses. Instructor candidates also will become familiar with GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow and Water Safety presentations. This course prepares instructor candidates to use course and presentation materials, conduct training sessions and evaluates the progress ofcandidates in a professional-level course. This is a 26 hour course.Course Prerequisites:-Be at least 17 years of age on or before the last day of the instructor course.-Possess a Fundamentals of Instructor Training Certificate issued within the last year or possess a current national Health and Safety Services Instructor Authorization Certificate.-Successfully complete the pre-course session. This includes passing the pre-course written exam with a score of 80 percent or higher for each of three sections and demonstrating competency in the pre-course skills and scenariosevaluation.
