Southeast Missouri State University

Basketball, 3-on-3

The Game

  • Teams consist of three (3) players with unlimited substitutes for each team. All games must begin and end with at least (2) players.
  • The game is played to 21 points, win by two. Cap for the game will be 25.
  • A standard field goal is worth one (1) point; two (2) points will be awarded for baskets made from behind the “take back” or three-point line (19’9”).
  • There is one (30-second) timeout per game, per team. The clock will also stop in the event of an injury.
  • Games will be enforced with a 25-minute time limit. In the event of a tie at the end of 25 minutes, the next basket scored wins the game.
  • Possession after a made basket will be loser's outs.

Possesion and "Checking the Ball"

  • A coin toss will determine first possession. The alternate possession rule will be in effect after the coin toss.
  • The ball must be taken back behind the “take back” line on each change of possession. The "take back" line will be the 3-point arc. Change of possession includes a defensive rebound, made basket, “air ball” recovered by the defensive team, a turnover or a stolen ball by the defensive team.
  • 'Taking back' means the ball-handler’s feet and the ball must be behind the check line. Failure to do this will result in loss of possession and no points awarded if a basket is scored.
  • The ball must be checked by the opposing team after a made basket or a dead ball situation.
  • The ball must be passed in after it has been checked by the opposing team.

Fouls and Violations

  • Players call their own fouls. The player who is fouled is responsible for calling the foul at the point of the infraction.
  • If a player is fouled while shooting and makes the basket, the basket will count and the other team will gain possession of the ball.
  • If a player is fouled while shooting and misses the basket, the offensive team will maintain possession of the ball.
  • A team captain may ask the court monitor to settle disputes, whether it be “trash talk”, sketchy calls, unruly fans or rough play. The court monitor’s decision is final.
  • Shooting fouls will be handled in the following manner (on or after the 7th team foul). When the basket is made, count the basket. When the basket is missed andthe free throw is made, possession goes to the defensive team. If the free throw is missed, the offensive team retains possession.
  • Free Throw Option: In any free throw situations, (including intentional or flagrant fouls), the designated shooter may at his or her option choose to shoot from the free-throw line for one (1) point, OR from behind the 2 point line for 2 points. In either case, the player shooting must have both feet completely behind the line when initiating the attempt. If the 2 point shot is chosen, the non-shooting team will be awarded the ball regardless of whether the shot is successful or not (exception: intentional or flagrant fouls).

Co-Rec Rules

  • The minimum number of players to begin or end a game is 2 (must be 1 male and 1 female).
  • Co-Rec teams must have a combination of 2f/1m or 2m/1f on the court at all times, unless they only have 2 players.
  • Female baskets will count as 2 points inside the arc and 3 points outside the 19'9" arc.

Team Conduct

  • Any player/team may be removed from the game or tournament at the discretion of the court monitor for abusive behavior, flagrant fouls or rough play.
  • Any player involved in fighting or continuous misconduct during the game (including abusive behavior toward the court monitor) must meet with the Coordinator of Intramural Sports.
