History Day began in the state of Missouri in 1979 and Southeast Missouri State University was the location of the first state-wide event. Dr. Joel Rhodes serves as the District 9 coordinator. Those counties served through District 9 are : Washington, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, Perry, Iron, Reynolds, Madison, Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, Wayne, Carter, Ripley, Butler, Wayne, Stoddard, Scott, Mississippi, New Madrid, Dunklin and Pemiscot.
The themes vary every year and are open to students in the fourth and fifth grades (elementary division, sixth, seventh and eighth (junior division) and ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth (senior) grades. Students may participate by making a display board (similar to the science fair), putting on a skit with up to four people, making a video about a historical topic, or writing a paper. All plays and media productions must be less than 10 minutes in length.
